Mr. Andersen Talks DCUO DLC6 – Home Turf

Today Team SOE’s Jens Andersen revealed to a limited number of press a preview of DC Universe Online‘s often teased but yet to be fully revealed DLC 6 featuring the Home Turf Lair update (a $9.99 purchase). Well now we have a much more fleshed out picture of what it will look like at launch. I’m here for you masses yearning to know first just what to expect from this new update but first it’s a lot easier to understand the overarching concepts after watching this trailer revealing how the mainframe works.

As you can see your mainframe is your primary control panel for all things Lair from inviting players/Leagues to your secret base. This is a huge part of the fun factor of the lair as not only can you invite players over to fight in your lair (resulting in a bad ass sequence in which a lair specific cinematic to transition at the end of each round and push the battling players to a new part of the base), but you can also invite over your girlfriend that far exceeds your fashion sense to decorate your lair for you. Fish Tanks and paintings of ponies included assuming she can find them. Though a nifty feature that must be pointed out is that the UI smartly recognizes which location of the lair you have highlighted and will only show you items that can be placed there to save you time from scrolling through incompatible items to find one that fits. And with over 400 items to find at launch and more on the way, homebodies will be sure to spend hours getting their lair situated just right!

Which brings me to the next point. While the DLC may be a purchased item (no worries Legendary players, it’s still free for you), the actually items you fill your lair with are all found by doing content within the game. Starting at level 12 you’ll be able to access your lair and start randomly finding pieces of furniture and other items with utility just from playing the game. These items are fully tradeable to create a new element to the player driven economy. The only downside I have to say on the whole thing is that Sony Player Studios likely won’t be making an appearance with DCUO Lairs for a long time if ever due to complications with the PS3 version contract. Really unfortunate really when the possibilities could be so endless. But at least SPS is on its way to Vanguard and Planetside 2 soon we can’t cry too hard about it. Oh and as a side-note for those unfamiliar with DCUO, free players won’t be fully left out as they can still collect and decorate non-functional pieces of decoration in their smaller version of the lair, the hide-out.

So what else is special? For one you won’t have to worry about the front door of your lair looking like a revolving door at the Justice League. When you acquire the deed to purchase a lair you have to select the location in Arkham or Metropolis. These aren’t instanced but in fact real locations in the game overworld and will be marked by large green columns of light. As a nice feature you can teleport to any of the Lairs (yes you can own multiple lairs!) you own in an instant. Just like the real world though, this purchase is all about location location location. If you choose to live in the inner-city close to the scumbag villains or do-good heroes with similar empty pockets, you’re going to get your digs for cheap! If you want to upscale things to say Champion’s Way, you’re going to have to dig deeper and dish out some serious doe. And if you really have to impressive your homies with an iconic location like Arkham Asylum, expect to pay some cash shop currency in addition to a hefty sum of in-game currency. But that’s worth it to get featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Villainous isn’t it you superstar?

Of course those seeking a more dreary base such as the sewers won’t have to wait much longer as Andersen promised manhole entrances were in development and would be out in the near future. Also don’t fret if you win the lotto and seek to upgrade your Lair to a more prominent position in the city as Lair relocation exists allowing you to keep the majority of your decorations intact as you move! You can even move decorations between lairs without having to physically go between them. How is that for convenience?

Once your city and location is chosen, you then can choose your overarching theme. At launch you can choose from a Deco Theme and Gothic Theme as well as the basic Dive Theme from the hide-out. There are also 4 themes that will be available for purchase at launch including my personal favorite, the Ancient Theme, ideal for people like V that enjoy building a museum out of their Lair. Next you can adjust the permanent fixture locations in your lair. Think of these are Wall Studs when hanging something heavy in your house. Pink fixtures allow you to play functional items like auction houses, soda machines, alchemy tables, brokers, sparring dummies, and such. The rest of the fixture points are for your furniture, though I was sad to discover that they have forcefully placed the positions in lairs to prevent my plans of building a fortress out of extinct mammal statues. Back to the drawing board…

I see your pitiful pillow fortress and raise you a mammoth and sabretooth!

Finally the Mainframe functions with power generators to enable the true features of the Lair including your orbital strike, supply drops, accomplices/sidekick and henchmen, and research modifications.

Orbital Strike offers a fire filled AoE explosion you can call in from space during battle to change the tides in your favor.

Supply Drops can offer temporary on the fly power buffs or heals to give you that edge you need to hold out.

Accomplices and Sidekicks offer your own decently powered helper to make you feel like you have a true protege. While henchmen are slightly weaker, they make up for it in numbers and coordination. They are also themed after whichever lair you use for added effect! This was the part that had me most excited as it’s one of the closest features I’ve seen to the now cancelled game, Langrisser Schwarz.

Research Modifications can be inserted into your weapons and gear to offer powerful bonuses.

All of these abilities are reliant on your generators so you’ll need to keep your generators filled up to keep your powers intact. You can also upgrade each feature to specialize your lair’s powers to meet your personal preferences.

Now while lairs are a huge part of DLC 6, they aren’t the only thing being packaged. Villains will gain access to the new locations  Arkham Asylum and Steelworks while Heroes will get to visit Ace Chemicals and Striker’s Island. Each location features 5 daily quests that, when completed, open up a conclusion style solo instance where your skills will be tested against iconic bosses in epic battles. Appropriately themed outfits will also be added to the game so be sure to check these places out if you want to upgrade your stagnant wardrobe!

All this will be available to players starting next Tuesday, the 29th, with the exception of PS3 EU players who will have to wait until the 30th.

DK Online Launches for a New Generation of Dragon Knights

DK Online

The time has come for legions of new Dragon Knights to step up and save the world! Aeria Games, a leading global publisher of free-to-play online games, has announced the launch of DK Online, its newest massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Following the overwhelmingly positive response to several beta phases, DK Online is now available to all players, and all character progress will now be permanent and not subject to being wiped in the future.

Several new additions to the world of Litos have arrived with the launch in order to provide players with vastly more content to explore than previously seen during beta testing. Two completely new castles have been introduced to Castle Siege mode—DK Online’s most popular player vs player (PvP) feature in which rival guilds battle for the ownership of these strongholds and the helpful perks that come along with them. In addition, a bevy of new boss creatures have been added throughout the world for intrepid knights to slay in search of glory and loot.

The ceiling has also been raised for character progression. The brand-new zone of Emtlant has opened up a high-level area suitable for players at or near the new level cap of 42. As another means of outfitting their characters, players can now attain Battle Points for earned PvP kills during epic Realm vs. Realm battles.

“After a lot of hard work and incorporating the great feedback we received from players during beta testing, we’re proud to release DK Online,” said Tom Nichols, Director of Publishing at Aeria Games. “This game’s strong graphics, balanced classes, and unique PvP castle sieges are sure to be a big hit with Aeria’s player community.”

Popular throughout the beta tests, GMs will once again host special events to engage players in-game. More information on these events is available on the game’s forums. DK Online is free to download, and like all Aeria Games titles, is free-to-play.

Path of Exile Review – Still Alive, Are We?

Path of Exile Review – Still Alive, Are We?

By John Shadle (Sephorus), OnRPG Journalist

Path of Exile, the debut title from Grinding Gear Games, is a project born out of ambition.  Billed as a completely free-to-play action RPG – a genre made popular with the likes of the Diablo franchise – Path of Exile promises an unforgiving world with incredibly deep levels of customization.  In preparation for their Open Beta release, I set out to give this title a look – and found what I might consider one of the better action RPGs I’ve ever played.

Character creation is simple enough.  You select one of six exiles bound for the forsaken continent of Wraeclast.  Each has a very distinct style and personality, and while there’s nothing explicit to tell you what each of the six is good at, watching their movements and hearing their stories gives you a good sense of what they’re capable of.  After a name selection and choice of league – another name for server ruleset – you’re dumped, rather unceremoniously, on the shores of your destination.  You learn very quickly everything you need to know about being here – namely that your ship wrecked, most people on board didn’t survive, the island is crawling with the undead, and most of the natives (zombified or otherwise) plan on turning you into their next meal.  So begins your struggle for survival in Wraeclast.

Atmospherically, Path of Exile delivers.  Each area you can visit, from a meager survivor’s camp to an abandoned prison to a bandit-infested forest, reeks of its own style while further cementing just how bleak and forsaken the life of an exile is.  Beaches are littered with driftwood from wrecked ships.  Looters and bandits are found slow-roasting their own kinsmen for a future meal.  Shadows dance from your light source in dark areas – and there’s always something shuffling, crawling, or chittering off in the distance.  More than once, I found myself motionless in a room, merely listening to skeletal footsteps emanating from close by and feeling slightly unnerved when I realized that the sound came from everywhere.  There are lots of little touches across the world that come together to imprint one simple message – nowhere is safe here.

One of the biggest changes for Path of Exile compared to other action RPGs is its equipment system.  The most jarring thing is currency – namely, there isn’t any in the traditional sense.  While you can sell off extra equipment, you’ll get upgrade items which allow you to alter the properties of other pieces of gear.  Selling enough high-quality weapons at one time gives you an item to improve the quality of another weapon.  Selling identified magic items give shards that combine to let you reroll the properties of another magic item.  It takes some getting used to, and perhaps a bit of research in what you can get for selling certain combinations of things, but it eventually gives a fair amount of flexibility for being able to forge a non-magical item into something far more potent.

Another welcome change is how Path of Exile handles potions.  Rather than carry a stack of consumable potions that require resupplying at towns, each exile carries five flasks on their belt.  These flasks can restore health, mana, or both depending on what kind you’re using, with higher-end flasks restoring more over time.  These flasks will empty as you use them and refill as you defeat enemies, meaning you’ll still need to manage how much you’re using, but can keep your flasks topped off almost indefinitely – as long as there’s a growing trail of bodies in your wake.

The absolute biggest change that Path of Exile presents, though, is its ability system.  In short, most of your equipment has gem sockets; these sockets can be linked to each other or they can be standalone.  You’ll find ability gems through your travels (either through quests or random drops from enemies) that can freely be placed and removed from these sockets.  These gems can gain experience as you have them socketed, which lets them grow in potency, but also increases the level and stat requirements needed to use them.  Gems come in three styles – red for Strength-based, green for Dexterity-based, or blue for Intelligence-based.  As each of the exiles favors either one or two of these three stats, they also generally have ability gems that will be more of a natural fit for them.  However, there are no class-specific gems, so as long as the attribute and level requirements of the gem are met (along with the right kind of weapon, in the case of some attack skills), any exile can use any gem.

Linked sockets come into play when you factor in support gems; these do nothing on their own, but instead modify other abilities they are linked to.  For example, one of the gems I came across was Shield Charge, which unsurprisingly let me run a short distance and bash an enemy with my equipped shield.  Putting a support gem of Added Fire Damage in a linked socket would augment Shield Charge to also set targets on fire when I hit them.  There are tons of ability gems and support gems available in Path of Exile, with the developers looking to add more as time goes on, which makes the prospect of abilities much deeper (and depending on what you link together, much more awesome) than initially expected.

Exiles will also earn passive ability points as they level and occasionally as quest rewards.  These points can be spent in a massive ability grid to grant passive bonuses or alterations to your playstyle.  Each exile starts in a different place on this grid, which determines what they have easier access to unlock.  However, there are absolutely no restrictions to how you maneuver the ability grid, meaning that it’s possible, albeit over time, to bring your Intelligence-favoring Witch over to the Marauder’s Strength-heavy area of the grid and spend the majority of your points there.  Some of these passive abilities are simple, with straight bonuses to stats, increased damage with a particular weapon type, better armor ratings from your equipment, etc.  Some are more potent, with things like Resolute Technique making your attacks unavoidable but unable to critical hit or Blood Magic removing your mana pool and making your abilities cost health instead.  I hesitate to call it simple – not when the ability grid sports somewhere around 1350 possible nodes, making it so large that you can’t zoom out far enough to see it all at once – but it grants an absolute flexibility and diversity that’s rarely seen in games nowadays.

Grinding Gear Games set out to bring an unforgiving, difficult action RPG experience with incredibly deep customization potential to the free-to-play world, and in that regard, Path of Exile is absolutely set to deliver.  With what the team has put together so far and with what’s to come in the months ahead, the bar’s about to be raised on the action RPG genre.  I doubt the exiles will give that spot up without a fight.
