KingsRoad Updated Look

By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor)

kingsroad1

Kingsroad is a browser based massively multiplayer online role playing game made by Rumble Entertainment. In this hack and slash type of RPG that is completely playable in your browser of choice you take the role of a hero. As a Royal Knight, it’s your duty to serve as the personal guard of the King, a highly revered ruler of the realm. However with his sudden disappearance, evil creatures have begun lurking in the shadows and threatening to conquer the kingdom. It’s now up to you to protect the princess from the enemy’s clutches and fight to free the kingdom.

Right away you are asked to help a close by town that has been taken over by goblins. This mission is the tutorial test, explaining weapon use and general gameplay. Once the town is free from evil, you meet with the locals and get an explanation of the available classes, what they offer, and even a few tools to aid you in your journey. Currently there are three available classes that Kingsroad offers. The Knight stands as the only melee class, wielding a sword and board. The Archer offers fast mobile ranged damage. Finally the Wizard offers a variety of powerful magic spells to bring the pain. Each one of these classes is specialized in their own game style and hase great synergy when together as a party.

I went for the Knight, a mighty warrior that prefers to kill his enemies at a closer range. In Kingsroad you attack an enemy by clicking on them; just like in any hack and slash game the combat is fast and your mouse is the most important tool to guide you through the world and attack or destroy anything in your way. Together with your skills you can quickly kill off groups of monsters or knock them out one by one. Straight away you are given a starter skill. In my case it was a knock back that helped me bring my foe to the ground long enough to get a few unopposed hits in.

Overall the experience plays out surprisingly fast for a browser based MMO. There is no lag, or any slow gameplay elements. Everything flows smoothly whether you’re spamming your hotkey for a clutch potion drink or casting a spell. And thus fighting large groups of enemies, or bigger bosses is a lot of fun and actually quite challenging. Just like in most hack and slash games, gear can be found by either killing monsters or in chests.

Since the game is completely free to play, there is a currency that can be bought with real money. This currency is called the Gem. This blue gem lets you purchase premium items or open chests that you will find throughout the world. Thankfully these gems can also be obtained by finishing missions or getting achievements, so you do not have to buy them if you want to open a chest or save up for something in the shop. Unfortunately I do think it is a bit unfair since you can buy items with Gems that can actually make your character stronger. For example, you can buy equipment that will boost your character, or you can even buy your character potions that let him do more damage to a faction or gives him a lot of stat boosts, including experience. And if you feel like strengthening you skills, you can also buy your character skill points to make his skills stronger. You can also buy your character a skin, a concept akin to what we’ve seen in most MOBAs these days. Surprisingly this doesn’t impact your strength at all, and I wish more of their cash shop strategy was built around this concept.

Skill evolution is the primary driving factor that will keep you playing KingsRoad. It’s what makes your character special after all and you get a bit of control over what you strengthen over time. You can, for example, focus your Knight into an AoE agro specialist, or power up single target skills to take out boss creatures faster. I could also level up his supportive skills if I were to play in a party a lot, so I could boost my friends’ combat prowess. There are also a lot of passive skills that you can level up for your character, and overall the depth on tap surpasses most other fantasy browser MMOs on the market.

Conclusion: Great

For a free to play browser MMO, I was surprised how smoothly KingsRoad looks and plays. I can easily compare it to some of the buy to play titles on the app store. Rather than being pidgeon-holed into a leveling escalator, I felt my decisions mattered and my fighting style had to match them to obtain success. The monetization system is the only major drawback here, as it can be pretty tough to stay on par with other players when not spending a dime. With nearly everything that boosts your character on sale, they take it further than most MMOs would dare to. If you’re competitive and like to show off your progress versus others, this might be a deal breaker for you. But if you want to just cut loose and enjoy an awesome fast-paced browser game without worrying about keeping up with your neighbors, you won’t be disappointed by KingsRoad.

Taking the Train Ride with Ticket to Ride

by: Ojogo

1

Board games have become fairly popular these days, even outside of geeky circles.  One game that has captured the hearts of many is Ticket to Ride by Days of Wonder.  In this train-inspired game, you play the role of a rich train baron who is trying to control all the routes in the United States.  The board game is so popular that it spawned many versions of the game available in PC, Android, and iOS.

Getting things Started

The popular game was brought to the internet with Ticket to Ride Online.  The problem with most board games is that they usually carry a social aspect that never translates well when it’s made into a video game.   However, it’s fairly different with Ticket to Ride, where one can literally get lost playing hours and hours just trying to beat it.

2

Ticket to Ride Online gave the board-game-turned-video-game the social aspect it needed by bringing it online and allowing you to play with other players over the internet.  Ticket to Ride Online is not free.  There’s a one-time fee of $9.99 for unlimited play.

Gameplay and Features

For those unsure if they want to spend that much, the Days of Wonder website allows for four trial games before you decide if you want to purchase the game or not.  When you jump into the game you will be given the option to play solo first against computer opponents.  This is to let you familiarize yourself with the game mechanics.  The nice thing about the video game translation is that it copies the rules from the board game exactly as it is without making any liberties in the gameplay.  So if you’re a fan with the original board game then it shouldn’t be hard to get used to playing it online.

Another neat feature of the online game is that it runs on Java.  This means that you don’t have to install a game client on your PC.  You just need to make sure you have Java already installed on your rig and you are good to play the game right away.  This shouldn’t be a problem as well as most online-based games these days run on either Flash or Java.

3

On solo play, you get to compete against 3 computer opponents.  Just like in the traditional board game, the idea is to get as many points accumulated by claiming routes, connecting cities, and having the longest train line.  You will have 45 train pieces at your disposal to do this, so you have to choose wisely.  You start the game with 4 locomotive cards of different colors and 3 destination tickets.  These tickets show which cities you need to connect.  You can start the game by choosing at least 2 tickets and returning the 3rd to the pile or getting all three tickets.  You will then be dealt 4 train cards.  The cards are of different colors.  To claim a route on the board, you will need to have as many train cards of the same color to claim the route.  The longest route is 6 trains long.  There are also locomotive cards, also known as wild cards.  They can represent any color so can be used with any other train card.

Since you only start with 4 cards, more often than not, you will need to draw a lot of cards before you can start laying down trains.  You can either draw 2 cards from the face up pile or 2 cards from the face down deck.  However, if you draw a wild card from the face up deck, that constitutes as your 2 card draw.  On the board, you will see colored tracks and one that looks gray or no color.  To claim colored tracks, you need the same colored cards.  But for gray ones, you need cards of any same color.  The longer the tracks, the more points you get.

Now of course, you don’t want to just be building random tracks or routes.  Since you have destination tickets, you’ll want to get cities connected that are indicated on your destination tickets.   When you complete a destination, you can claim the points at the end of the game.  But if you don’t complete them, the points will be deducted from you.

Moving Forward

However, the game isn’t really as challenging when fighting computer opponents and the online version allows for other formats.  Once you complete your first solo game, you will then be brought to a player’s lounge where you can then participate in an online game.  This is reminiscent of playing online chess or go.  You can either choose to join an existing game, by clicking on it, or create a new game.

If you choose to join a game, just select one of the available games on the list.  You’ll be able to see which maps are used (as there are a variety of maps, just like the game) and players that are already signed up for the game.  Once you decide, you can click on the game and click on Join.  You just need to wait from here for the game to start.  The nice aspect of the online game as well is that you can chat with your opponents as if they are really there with you.  And let’s face it, what’s the point of playing a board game if you can’t play and interact with others?

4

I also noticed this game doesn’t require a lot of bandwidth to play.  I caution to say that you may be able to play this game on dial up.  The chief complaint with many online Java games is that it has a tendency to be sluggish.  However, I have noted that the game here tends to be responsive.  This game does not require time, so there isn’t any rush, but of course you wouldn’t want other players to be waiting for you because it’s lagging.  You won’t have that much of a problem to deal with as the game itself isn’t very heavy so it is able to respond and move right away.

If you’re not interested in the games that you see, you can start your own game by clicking on Create Game.  You’ll then be able to see a bunch of options like which map to play on, if you want computer opponents, how many players, and if the game can be observed by other players not joining the game.

I have also noted that the players tend to chat in the player lounge or in-game.  To be honest however, when I started playing, I didn’t really chat that much and just wanted to beat my opponents.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a good board game to video game translation, Ticket to Ride Online does its job.  You can practically play anywhere you want as long as Java is installed in the computer and all you need to do is go to the Days of Wonder website to start playing.  The game comes with 4 trial games and is available at $9.99 for unlimited access.

Grand Chase Gets Tower of Disappearance Dungeon

Grand Chase ToD Banner

Today KOG Games, publisher of the hit free-to-play MMO Brawler, Grand Chase, releases the most difficult dungeon to date: The Tower of Disappearance.

The aftermath of the heroic battle between the Knights of the Grand Chase and the erratic demon Veigas sent a surge of magic across the veil so powerful that time, and reality itself, fractured.  Through this rift emerged the eminent, diabolical monolith, the Tower of Disappearance. Though, this was no accident, the vile powers that creep the halls of this infernal tower have prepared for this moment for centuries; waiting for the realm to be at its weakest and the perfect time to unleash a demonic onslaught upon this world; the likes of which have never been seen before.

The Tower of Disappearance is for hardcore dungeon crawlers only. The ToD is a Hero Dungeon for the highest level players. That’s right; this is end-game content with some of the biggest, baddest and scariest monsters and bosses ever. With the biggest and baddest monsters come big and awesome loot.

What makes this dungeon so evil? For starters, there are no potions and no continues allowed. Players get one shot at this dungeon of dungeons. Even pets get their attacks limited. Fido won’t be able to jump in and save you this time. Players will scale 10 floors with brutally challenging environments on each of them; all of this leads up to the epic rematch between Kaze’Aze and the Grand Chase. But don’t take too long to figure this all out, if players take too long to traverse the catacombs a rain of blood will begin to pour from the sky draining HP and bringing about nothing short of death. Move fast … or perish. However, if players move quickly and do well an HP boost will be applied when moving on to the next floor.

Sounds rough right? Why do it? Because a leader board showing everybody in the realm who the biggest and baddest dungeon crawlers are will be designated for this Tower. Also, the True Iron Dragon sets drop nowhere else but here, and a Single Property Scroll (the rare scroll that allows players to change a single item property) may land in your hands … and these are some of the best items in-game.
