Echo Prime (PC) Review – Super Sized Sci-Fi

By Michael Sagoe (mikedot)

Robot Entertainment has been known for bringing bright and color action and strategy game to both the iOS and PC platform. Echo Prime was one of their most recent iOS titles featuring sci-fi action, intuitive touch controls, customizable equipment/abilities and huge boss battles all wrapped up in a cybernetic package. Now the development team has ported Echo Prime right onto the PC platform with improved visuals, new content and more. But how much of a jump does this bite sized iOS game make to the PC?

Echo Prime 1

Controls

Right off the bat, the first thing that needs to be said about the game is the control scheme, as Echo Prime primarily uses the mouse for many different actions. Players can move their soldier around the field by point & click, as well as attack enemies by clicking on them with LMB. Depending on your character’s distance from each enemy, attacking from long or medium range will perform ranged attacks while attacking in close range will allow you to attack with your sword. Players can also guard attacks using RMB, and when pressed at the right time, players can deflect projectiles and perfect block against melee attacks.

While the control scheme sounds like it should work well enough, it’s far too sensitive in the most crucial of moments. Biggest example: Players can double tap in any direction in order to dodge attacks at any time, as well as pull their mouse towards an enemy before clicking on them to perform a lunging sword attack. When the enemies start to surround the player, it’s far too easy to end up dodging or attacking other enemies at the worst possible moment, which will cause to you take hits for all the wrong reasons.

The 1-6 keys can also be used to activate various abilities, some of which have extra commands tied to them, such as having to draw a line on the screen to create a trail of fire on the ground, or clicking a spot on the ground to drop an explosive barrel. These abilities can also be activated by clicking them in the corner of the screen, so it’s quite possible to play the entire game only using the mouse. However, due to the fast paced nature of the gameplay, playing only using the mouse is not recommended.

As the game progresses, it becomes more increasingly clear how much of a direct port this game is from its iOS counterpart. Strangely enough, players can also use the WASD keys in order to perform dodges in every direction, which begs to question why they simply could not dedicate the movement and dodging actions to the WASD keys altogether.

Gameplay

While it may seem like a dungeon crawler, similar to the likes of Diablo or Torchlight, the gameplay is a lot more comparable to that of a classic beat ‘em up. The basic premise for a mission is to travel to the end of the map, defeating any enemies that appear on screen, pick up a power-up or two, fight more enemies on screen and finally defeat a sub-boss to complete a single room. Rinse and repeat about two to four more times in order to complete a single level. There’s no exploration, no alternative paths or anything special when playing a mission.

It’s straight forward and the weariness of repetition will set in quickly. Echo Prime attempts to break up the repetition by including other mission types such as surviving waves of enemies within a time limit, defending an objective within a time limit, weakening enemies in order to capture them, or defeating a massive boss enemy. The basic premise of defeating everything (or almost everything) on screen is still the same, and these slight deviations do very little to make these missions any more enjoyable in the long run.

Echo Prime 2

The repetitiveness of missions is far too great to play Echo Prime in long sessions, which isn’t too surprising since this was originally an iOS game, on a platform mainly tailored for casual gaming. It may be enjoyable to play in small doses, but Echo Prime will make most seasoned PC players wish they were playing a more legit dungeon crawler or beat ‘em up. It also doesn’t help that the major challenge of Echo Prime’s gameplay is just a challenge of patience, as players will have to learn to not be greedy with their attacks against mobs of enemies while dealing with the touchy controls, as well as grind through many optional missions in order to earn strong enough equipment to progress in later missions.

Customization

Another boasted feature for Echo Prime is the “Echoes” system, where players can earn active and passive abilities from different alien life-forms from all over the galaxy. Up to five abilities can be used in a mission, which includes a random ability selected by a random online player, and they range from extra damage, snares, knockbacks, buffs and more. Players can also share these echoes with friends, which gives the game somewhat of a card collection element, but chances are that most players will find a particular set of echoes that they’re most comfortable with early on and stick with them throughout the rest of their playing experience.

Echo Prime 3

Visuals and Presentation

The visual design for Echo Prime comes off as a generic take on sci-fi, with familiar concepts such as laser swords, plasma guns, chrome studded armor and zerg / protoss-like aliens. Since this is a direct port of an iOS game, the graphical detail for Echo Prime is certainly not pushing any boundaries, as character models have fairly low polygon counts and moderately detailed environments. The musical score is also fairly generic with mystifying sounds of deep space and plain techno / electronica music that’s anything but memorable. Overall, the entire presentation for Echo Prime just comes off as weak and uninspired.

Echo Prime 4

Overall: Fair

Echo Prime for the PC stands as a fairly mediocre title that may be enjoyable to play in small doses, but does not have much lasting appeal compared to other similar titles. For me, it serves as a small example that some gaming experiences are simply more acceptable on certain gaming platforms and may not translate well on others.

Shroud of the Avatar

Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues is a computer role playing game created by Lord British (a.k.a Richard Garriott), creator of the genre defining Ultima series of computer games, and Starr Long, director of Ultima Online. It combines the rich story of the single player Ultimas with the deep multiplayer experiences of Ultima Online.

Features:

Selective Gameplay: Play options will include solo offline, solo online, friends only online, or open multiplayer online. For players who play in the default open multiplayer, Shroud of the Avatar will feel very much like a traditional MMO.

Housing and plots: Players will stake their claim to in-game lots and build dwellings ranging from humble cottages to towering island castles.

Sigils and Circles: Players will adventure in an interactive world where their choices have consequences, ethical paradoxes give them pause, and they play a vital part in weaving their own story into the immersive world and lore surrounding them.

Robust Home Decoration: Players will make their virtual properties truly unique with a brand new decorating system that brilliantly marries simplicity of use with unlimited attention to detail.

Dragon’s Prophet: Olandra zone and new content launching today

Today, Sony Online Entertainment released new updates for its fantasy MMORPG, Dragon’s Prophet, including an all-new zone, Treasure Hunts, Chinese New Year Events and more.

DP Olandra

The new zone “Olandra” adds another dimension to Dragon’s Prophet by introducing the game’s first underwater dungeon, Shrine of Handras. This Legendary Dungeon features five new bosses with mechanics never-before-seen in Dragon’s Prophet, deadly aqua monsters and whirlpools, and frequent Stone Shards drops, which give access to rare and powerful weapons. In addition to ruthless bosses and new dragons, with this zone, players will see a level cap increase from 90 to 94. Along with entry to Olandra, starting today, Dragon’s Prophet players will be able participate in Treasure Hunting events. Once per week, players can locate Traveling Merchants throughout the game and follow various clues and puzzles to discover hidden treasure and rewards.

Adjustments to enhance and bring more depth to the class system have also been implemented, and mounted combat has been expanded beyond PvP and is now available in the dungeons as well.

Lastly: It’s the Year of the Horse, and players can celebrate the Chinese New Year with the all-new Chinese Patrol Dragon Event. From Feb.6 until Feb. 13, 2014, a different and rare capture-able Eastern Dragon will appear in each of the zones to celebrate the New Year. The dragons will respawn only once every couple hours, so players need to be on their guard if they want to capture the elusive beasts.

Dragon’s Prophet Olandra and Beyond Interview

Questions by Jordan Hall (ApocaRUFF)

Answers by Todd Carson, DP SOE Senior Producer

DragonsProphetOlandra6

ApocaRUFF: Hello and thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. Would you mind introducing yourself to our readers and letting us know what your part in the production of Dragon’s Prophet NA is?

Todd: My name is Todd Carson and I am the Senior Producer for SOE on Dragon’s Prophet. I act as the primary point of contact with the developer, Runewaker Entertainment, working with them to plan new content, schedule updates and provide feedback from our player base.

ApocaRUFF: We know a few of the things that will be included in the coming update, but could you give us a quick overview of what exactly we can expect? What can we expect from the Dragon Arenas?

Todd: This week we will be introducing a new zone called Olandra, which will introduce players to some very cool features. For starters, players will now be able to advance their characters from level 90 to level 94. There is also a Legendary Dungeon that takes place completely underwater. Additionally, players will have access to new dragons, gear, quests and we’ll be introducing a new Treasure hunt feature with weekly events for players of all levels. Mounted combat will also be available in all dungeons.

Coming later this year will be Dragon Arenas, Dragon Compendium, additional changes to the class system, and the Dragon Evolution system.

Dragon Arenas are going to be a blast! With the first arenas, two players will be able to face off with three dragons each. The arenas also allow for other players to watch these awesome battles.

DragonsProphetOlandra5

ApocaRUFF: Do you guys plan to begin holding tournaments and leagues with this new Battle Arena system?

Todd: We expect players/guilds to be running tournaments on a regular basis.  While there are no tools for us to run official tournaments yet, we certainly like the idea and will look at what we can do to host some events with prizes.

ApocaRUFF: The Dragon Compendium is something that has me a bit excited, but also a bit worried. I’m excited with what it will bring to the game, but I’m a bit afraid that it won’t be everything I hope it will be. I was looking forward to it being a sort of Pokedex, but for Dragons that would give you general lore and info on dragons you run into or tame. However I’ve heard it likened to a sticker book instead. Can you go a bit into detail about what exactly it will bring to the game?

Todd: This is a feature I have been looking forward to for quite some time also. Let me start by saying that the feature is still a work in progress. However, from what we have so far, the Compendium is a bit of a combination of what you have described above. Players can view all of the different dragons they have captured and see the level of where each dragon is currently. There will be additional information on lore and skills about captured dragons. Also, the Dragon Compendium will track battle activities in the Dragon Arenas.

DragonsProphetOlandra4

ApocaRUFF: What kind of changes can we do with our dragon using the new Dragon Evolution system? Will we be able to change the looks of the dragon, or just stats, abilities and traits?

Todd: I’m personally looking forward to these added customization of dragons as developing my dragons is one of my favorite things in the game. The plan is for players to be able to enhance their relationship with their dragon through advanced training. We’re still finalizing details, but I can tell you that this is going to be a really neat feature for players.

ApocaRUFF: What can you tell us of Olandra, the new zone that will be added to the game? What kind of lore does it have behind it?

Todd: Northeast of Alentia lays Olandra, the northernmost explored region in Auratia. Olandra is a mostly calm region with blue skies and clear weather on most days, making it a welcome environment for adventurers who have recently braved the harsh environments of Wintertide and Alentia. But looks aren’t everything, as Olandra is hiding a dark secret. Eons ago, a powerful dragon known as Handras the Indigo Fog left behind crystals imbued with its power. Now, these crystals have fallen into the wrong hands. Not all inhabitants of Auratia wish to make peace and live in harmony with dragons like the Skyhammer Clan. Some of Olandra’s most corrupted follow a twisted prophecy that aims to eradicate all dragons from Auratia!

DragonsProphetOlandra3

ApocaRUFF: What can we expect from this new Legendary Dungeon, Shrine of Handras? What will set it apart from the rest of the dungeons in the game?

Todd: The Shrine of Handras is a completely underwater environment. There are five new bosses in this unique dungeon and each display brand new behaviors and fighting styles that players will have to overcome to defeat them.

The Shrine of Handras also sets itself apart from most of the other underwater zones seen over the years in MMOs because movement and combat is not slowed down — there is no sluggish feeling. While characters will now swim instead of run – and certainly the creatures look and behave differently in many aspects – overall, combat is just as fun and fast paced underwater as on land.

DragonsProphetOlandra2

ApocaRUFF: Will there be any new dragons to be found in Olandra? Personally, I’m hopping for some new non-ancient dragons that can be found out in the wild.

Todd:  You bet there will be new dragons in Olandra! I don’t want to spoil the fun for everyone, but definitely look for new ancient and non-ancient dragons. These dragons can be found in the main adventure area as well as in the dungeons.

ApocaRUFF: Something I’ve personally dealt with in the past while playing Dragon’s Prophet is that zones seem to struggle to have enough content to get you through the leveling process in a smooth manner. After level 30, it seems like you have to resort to relying on daily Public Events to continue leveling and gain access to new quests. Will this still be a problem in Olandra?

Todd: We recently made a change to the experience gained during levels 1-30 that helps prevent players from out leveling the content. Players now level up faster and reach level 30 quicker, before they have played through all of the quests and storylines. Though, some players have seen that they can gain experience faster by participating in Public Events rather than following the storyline only. Overall, the game has been adjusted to allow leveling from 1-94 without running out of traditional gameplay content.

DragonsProphetOlandra1

ApocaRUFF: Is there anything you can tell us about what to expect next from Dragon’s Prophet? Or any words about the game that you would like to share with our readers?

Todd: We plan to continue to refine Dragon’s Prophet as well as add new content, dragons and fun features throughout 2014. We want players to have the best experience possible and I think the game has really come a long way since we entered Open Beta in May of 2013. Since then, we have made many changes to improve existing systems, and regularly added new content and dragons. Now is a great time to jump in!
