2014 MMO Predictions – Let Gamers Be Heard

By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor)

Looking back at 2013, the year has been an odd year. The industry has become a little bit smaller, but also a little bigger. We have seen a lot of new tech, and a lot of new paths for developers to take, it isn’t necessarily the wild west again but I do think the industry scrambling to solve a bit of a puzzle right now. But more on this later, looking back at 2013 I really think we made a step forward in the right direction of the existence of the gaming industry.

Bound by Publisher Dollars No Longer

The internet is voicing its own opinion, each day getting louder and stronger and there’s a heavy focus on the outcry towards the gaming industry. No longer are game studios bound to having a publisher, with a good idea and enough initiative you no longer need to ask the bigger publishers to get interested in your game. No, this isn’t needed anymore and instead you can interact directly with the gamers to see if enough of a market is there to fund your development cost. One of the biggest developments we have seen in 2013 is seeing Star Citizen develop. This is no longer a game that is still in progress, no it is actually a project made by gamers like you and me, and developers working in the industry as long as it exists. They have no publisher that keeps reminding them that a game has to be out by the end of the year, but rather deadlines are set by the team that understands expectations versus the reality of the project. The success they garner should inspire plenty more indie developers to give their project a try on the open market.

Kickstarters, crowd funds or anything else like this will be making the year of 2014 a revolution for the gaming industry. I believe that publishers will have to take a step back, perhaps even rethink their business plan because with the start of Star Citizen a whole new window opened and I predict that many more will follow this crowd funding project.

Return to the TCG Roots

There’s a less noticeable movement gaining momentum in 2013 that’s only going to grow this year. 2014 will be the return of the card game, and no not the physical packs we picked up as kids. With the Hearthstone beta being out for quite some time now, and seeing more and more card games coming onto the market, I think we will once again see this simple yet amazingly fun concept rise into prominence. It’s a rule that Blizzard has to be copied in this industry after all.

Besides this I have always thought it was hard to predict something to happen, especially in our unstable industry today. We have seen an influx of ideas looking to change the way we input controls into gaming. Among them the Oculus Rift stands positioned to turn the entire PC industry on its head with fully immersive 3D+ gaming. But what if that’s just a distraction? Could there be even wilder hardware about to burst onto the scene to bring the connection between our brain and our avatar closer than ever before? One thing for sure, a revolution in the way we view gaming is coming.

GamerRevolution

I like the word revolution, though it’s typically related to the overthrow of government and social institutions, it relates to the state of the gaming industry well. “A sudden or momentous change in a situation.” And while most of our fellow writers are focusing on the revolution in the standard realm of MMOs, I the shooting genre shifted away from static arena combat and into further levels of persistent survival. And how perfect that such a movement was built on an unexpected successful mod rather than a publisher pushed initiative. It’s yet another way the audience is rising up to slam the industry in the face with their demands, and the industry is reeling in the current economic crisis to offer their loyal fans just that to stay afloat. Let us hope that 2014 will make the voice of us gamers even louder. Let us be heard even more, for our criticisms as well as our praises, because 2013 has shown us that desperation has finally brought the online gaming industry to the point that they are ready to listen and react.

EverEmber Online

EverEmber Online is an Openworld MMORPG without any objectives or primary quest lines or quests telling you how to play. While keeping the good elements of MMORPGs from the late 90’s through 2000’s, EverEmber keeps up to date by implementing many features of modern day MMORPGs.

Features:

Open-ended gameplay: Players can explore and play without any restrictions or objectives.

Old school MMO with new school style: Enjoy Classic MMO visuals with modern touch.

Complete social interaction: With a player-run economy, guilds, open-world PvP and no main goals, social interaction is more important than in many other MMORPGs today.

2014 MMO Predictions – The Console MMO War and Happy MOBA Players

By Jonar Isip (Ministryl)

Now that the long Sailor Jerry’s fog has lifted from my brain and liver, and I’ve regained 80% of my brain capacity (I’m sure the other 20% is permanently gone), my thoughts are free to turn toward the days ahead. I think that I’m qualified to make wild predictions of the future. I mean, back in 2010, shortly before World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was released, I told my friend that they’ll make an expansion that will have BOTH an unarmed class and a race of pandas.

“No freaking way,” said my friend who, incidentally, was 400 pounds and single, “that’s about as impossible as me getting fit and having a girlfriend.” Then, Mists of Pandaria happened.

Bodybuilders

Boom. Headshot!

Needless to say, my friend is now a world class body builder with a wife and 8 children. I practically changed his life.

Okay, none of that is true… except his dramatic weight loss and the girlfriend. More importantly, my prediction was also true and even more important is that it came to pass. Just ask my buddy, Matt. He’ll tell ya!

All of this is to say that I am capable of making predictions that have a chance of becoming true. Then again, you can do that too, so… Bah! Whatever! On to the list!

Increased Console Gamer Presence in the MMO Space

The current generation consoles, Playstation 4 and Xbox One (sorry Wii U), are essentially PCs under their dark, boxy, plastic cases. The implications of this are evident – the similar architecture means that the gates are practically wide open for MMOs, traditionally a PC staple, to port themselves over to these new systems. Sure, there have been games that were sold to both the PC and console markets before, with Final Fantasy XI among one of the first, but it’s never been easier to move between systems.

It would be madness for them to ignore the consoles, even if it has a fraction of the previous generation’s install base. Then again, Sony and Microsoft could put the whole idea on ice by closing off their systems to PC developers.

Note to Sony and Microsoft: Please don’t do that. I want my predictions to come true!

The MMO Subscription Model and Free to Play Microtransactions Will Merge Into a Gooey Morass of Sweet Financial Exploitation

MMORPGs, in particular, are expensive projects that take a long time to become profitable. The traditional subscription model was, previously, good enough to help keep the lights on, but lately it seems like these games are having a hard time doing that. We’ve seen a lot of games over the past few years ditch their sub models in favor of the free to play cash shop. Some games, like Guild Wars 2, were built up with F2P in mind.

But I think the subscription model is still viable, with a little help. World of Warcraft already has a cash shop for vanity items, like mounts. It wouldn’t be surprising if Blizzard applied the full weight of their Bag o’ Intellectual Property and fill the shop with tons more items, especially as the game’s subs continue to dwindle. The re-released Final Fantasy XIV is primed to follow suit. They are not beyond mixing their properties, as evidenced by the recent Lightning Returns: FFXIII Super Marketing Cross-Synergy Extravaganza Event that they held late last year. They could easily put up a cash shop for players who don’t have the time to pick up event items through quests.

Of course, anybody who would mix subs and cash shops would have to do so delicately, so that it doesn’t feel too gross. But I also think that, in 2014, people are growing accustomed to these attempts at their wallets. Or maybe they’re just jaded to it.

If this prediction were to come to pass, I’m actually not sure if I would be happy that I was right, or sad that we’re suckers for vanity pets.

Heroes Of The Storm

More MOBAs That Appeal to the Casual Player

I suck at MOBAs. Part of the reason why could be the lack of talent (of which, I’m sure, is what makes up a huge percentage of my suckitude), but part of it is has to do with the genre’s steep learning curve. Games like DOTA 2 ask so much of a beginning player from the outset. It also demands the best out of everyone in the team – one screw up from a single player and it’s usually lights out for the whole team.

The better teammates end up frustrated because a half hour of effort is gone thanks to a bad teammate, and the bad teammate feels discouraged because he or she had frustrated the entire team. It’s put a damper to the otherwise steady growth of the genre.

But with the increasing popularity of MOBAs comes a push for games that cater to the more casual crowd. Prime World already offers a side activity for non-combatant players, allowing them to be useful to their teammates if they’re not quick with the mouse. The upcoming Heroes of the Storm gets rid of individual levels in favor of team levels. This lets new players ride along their teammates’ momentum while slightly mitigating the problems with having an unskilled team member. Game mechanics like these will help stretch the MOBA genre’s dark tentacles beyond its hardcore heart.

Strife

2014 could be the year where the rank beginner can easily find a safe environment to learn the game. Frankly, there’s nothing good about the idiot that demeans you for your lack of skill, expressing a strong need to focus on your penis size, and saying mean things about your mother. It’s like punching a 10-month-old baby girl with a gauntlet full of horse shoes just because she couldn’t say the word “cat.” People who get off on stuff like that are awful people. And the angry kids in the MOBA community are just that awful.

Huh, now I have a bonus prediction for 2014: perhaps, this year will give rise to a kinder gaming community? That would be nice. But, this is the Internet. This is probably more wishful thinking than a prediction.

Gamigo Shutting Down Golfstar

Golfstar Woods

Gamigo has announced this week that Golfstar will be shutting down on February 24, 2014. New accounts and Star Point purchases have also been disabled, although current players can continue to play and spend their remaining points until the game service fully shuts down.

Gamigo’s farewell note added:

“We want to thank you for all of the wonderful hours we’ve spent together, as well as for your immense loyalty to making a great gaming environment despite many difficulties and setbacks. We’d particularly like to thank the entire Game Master team for their countless hours of support and service. We recognize that the game would have been a much different experience without their relentless loyalty to serving you.”

Tribal Wars 2: Cross-Platform Gameplay and Going Native for Mobile

TW2_Cross-Platform

Today InnoGames released additional information on its strategy online game Tribal Wars 2, describing the technical basis of the company’s first native cross-platform game. The browser component is a combination of the Open source-framework AngularJS, created by Google, and Javascript Canvas. Mobile access will be granted via native Apps – those use additional COCOS2D frameworks on iOS and Java as well as Libgdx on Android. All mobile versions will be optimized for touchscreen-use on numerous devices. 100.000 players already pre-registered for the upcoming closed beta phase.

Unlike its browser-based predecessor, which added crossplay via iOS and Android-Apps later, Tribal Wars 2 was planned to take full advantage of cross-platform possibilities. Therefore the game had to be streamlined on browser, tablets and smartphones in terms of technical basis and gameplay. “Our goal was to make all parts of gameplay feel and interact with the players the best way possible – on all platforms. At the same time, the performance had to meet our standards,” says Marc Kamps, Producer of Tribal Wars 2. “We experimented with multiplatform-solutions like HTML 5, but in the end, going native allowed us to take full advantage of the mobile devices’ processing power and touchscreen displays.” Kamps adds.

TW2_browser

Players can already pre-register for the game’s beta on www.tribalwars2.com. Tribal Wars 2 sports state-of-the-art graphics and will later be released as cross-platform for Android, iOS and all browsers. Therefore, players can set up one account for all platforms and play from whichever combination of devices they choose. In the recently released announcement Video, members of the team and InnoGames co-founder Hendrik Klindworth, are describing their visions for the game and upcoming features.

In Tribal Wars 2, players find themselves as leader of a small village in the midst of a medieval world. Tasked with growing and expanding their empire within a war-torn landscape, they have to fight in order to survive. The MMO’s focus is real-time strategic battles with and against other players. Tribal Wars 2 will be released as cross-platform game for Android, iOS and all browsers. Therefore, players can set up one account for all platforms and play from whichever combination of devices they choose.
