Guild Wars 2 Living Story – Origins of Madness
Guild Wars 2‘s living story continues as the dark machinations of a particularly twisted madam brings giant death robots and more to the citizens of Tyria.
Events to Rock Guild Wars 2 to the Core Begin with Origins of Madness
NCSoft and ArenaNet, publisher and developer of the acclaimed Guild Wars franchise, has just given gamers around the world their first taste of where the living world of Tyria is headed in 2014. In a teaser for “Origins of Madness, the year’s first release coming 21st January, the game makers offer a glimpse of incredible new adversaries and the beginning of an epic end to a storyline that began more than a year ago.
Beginning with “Origins of Madness”, Guild Wars 2 players will once again find themselves pitted against the forces of arch-villain Scarlet Briar. The sinister sylvari engineer has worked behind the scenes throughout 2013, wreaking havoc through her minions and clockwork creations. Her exact motivations remain a mystery, for now.
As players will see in the “Origins of Madness” teaser video, Scarlet will unleash a brand-new mechanical monstrosity on the living world of Tyria: the Twisted Marionette! A gigantic robotic weapon of mass destruction, the Twisted Marionette can only be stopped by a concerted effort on the part of players.
That’s not the only threat awaiting players, as the teaser video reveals. Scarlet’s machinations have unearthed something ancient and angry in Bloodtide Coast. The Great Jungle Wurm is a huge multi-headed creature so powerful that only an army of players can challenge it.
ArcheAge begins “Friends & Family” Alpha test for English Server
Finally, some good news from Trion Worlds regarding the English version of ArcheAge has come to light. The North America/Europe version of ArcheAge has finally entered its very first test phase, the “Friends & Family” Alpha.
That’s right! An English server is finally up and running, with 24/7 server support and updates. While no official schedule has been given, Trion Worlds mentioned last week that it will be less than 6 months before we see ArcheAge launching. Currently, ArcheAge’s “UI is now about 80% readable, and much of the quest text has been given at least a first pass at translation”.

Lucky Boxes Return to Silkroad Online
Leading online game developer and publisher Joymax reveals a return of a fan-favorite event for their immensely popular MMORPGs, Silkroad Online and Silkroad-R. Lucky Boxes are a frequently requested event, and they come hand-in-hand with a new Avatar outfit, and a huge improvement to the Magic Pop system!
They’re back! From now until February 11th, players will be able to collect Lucky Boxes that drop from monsters throughout the world. Once these boxes have been exchanged to So-Ok in town, players will receive limited time items including Monster Summon Scrolls (Party), Pandora’s Boxes, 500 HP and MP Increase Scrolls, HP and MP Recovery Grains, Berserker Regeneration Potions, and so much more. These items are intended for players to use immediately – they’ll disappear when the lucky boxes do next month!
January also brings about a new Avatar Costume: the Water Sprit Outfit! This outfit goes on sale starting today and will be a permanent fixture in the cash shop. This Avatar outfit was strongly influenced by the world of natural elements. Water is temperamental, and can be deviously treacherous under the surface. Is it wise to trust an adventurer with this outfit, knowing the nature of water can be so capricious? It’s up to the player to decide.
The Magic Pop system has also seen a full overhaul – you’ll be amazed at the changes! Fellows and Pets have now been added to the Pop draw, which includes some rare and exclusive followers and pets, such as the roly-poly Circus Bear. Angel Sprit and Extension Gear have also been added; these S-grade items are perfect for those looking for that extra advantage in surviving the treacherous Silk Road. The Avatar Costume list has been culled of old, less popular costumes and now includes many choices from the community itself. Golden Dragon and Roc Banners are now available for those lucky enough to snag these flashy items. Last but not least, all items, including Alchemy Stones, will now come in groups of 3 instead of just one!
Pantheon: New MMO by Everquest forefather joins Kickstarter
Kickstarter campaigns certainly have been springing up lately, but this next one has real potential to shine brighter than the rest, especially when it has industry veteran Brad McQuaid attached to the project.
Visionary Realms, Inc. announced today their plans to meet a growing demand in the MMO Games market by developing Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, a game targeted towards “challenge-seeking” gamers. The game’s design and ideas were inspired by feedback from many MMO communities that have been looking for a return to a classic style of MMO gameplay and group-focused game content.
“I receive emails almost every day asking for this type of game,” said Visionary Realms’ Chief Creative Officer, Brad McQuaid, who is best known for his critical and early involvement in the forming and influence of the MMORPG genre. “No one else seems to be answering this call. It’s the kind of game we’ve been wanting to play for so long and we’re finally getting a chance to make it, thanks to major advances in game development technology and crowdfunding.”
Visionary Realms Inc. is now launching its Kickstarter campaign, turning to the public for funding. “We believe there are many, many people out there who have been wanting a game like Pantheon for so long and we’re asking them for their help in making it happen,” said Director of Development, Salim Grant. “It’s the perfect opportunity for us to work with the fans and have everyone be a very real and important part of this exciting project.”

2014 MMO Predictions – ESO Failing and (hopefully) the End of an Era
By Jordan Hall (ApocaRUFF)
Last year was pretty slow for MMOs. Most of it was filled with announcements of future games, some closed beta testing, and a few disappointments. This year, on the other hand, should be a bit more interesting, with games like Elder Scrolls Online, ArcheAge, and Everquest Next: Landmark showing up. From the way things are looking, it seems like we will see developers pulling even further away from the themepark model and begin to embrace the sandbox instead. For most of us, this will be a fantastic change. For others (*cough ESO cough*), it may lead to a failure.
The focus of this article is to talk about Elder Scrolls Online and why I think it will fail. The primary reason I believe the game will be a complete disappointment, is that from what we’ve been shown so far, ESO is just another Themepark MMO. It doesn’t even seem to resemble any of the Elder Scrolls games we’ve come to love, minus sharing the same fantasy world. What has me most worried about this game is what we’ve seen from the combat (in various dev play videos), as it seems quite clunky and looks like a poor attempt to turn a point-and-click game into a non-target game. On top of that, it seems like the loved “create your own class” system that Elder Scrolls has gone with in the past has been thrown out the window in favor of a more traditional MMO class system.
What I, and I imagine hundreds of thousands of other gamers, wanted was an Elder Scrolls MMO that was of a mix of Morrowind, Oblivion, and maybe a tiny bit of Skyrim. Instead, what we’re getting is a World of Warcraft-TERA hybrid, that is re-skinned to resemble something from Elder Scrolls. Sure, both games are great and we all know that ES is incredible, but it’s not what we wanted. When I played Morrowind, I didn’t even pay attention to the games “main” storyline until I had already spent over a hundred hours in the game. The same with Oblivion and Skyrim. I’m afraid that ESO will just turn out to follow the Themepark formula to a T, a few side quests, a not-so-thought-out main line, and a bunch of zones that are separate in level difficulty.
I’m not saying the game will be bad. I’m sure it will be quite fun – until EverQuest Next comes out, at least. It actually has a decent amount going for it. The biggest being the world and lore. From what I’ve seen from videos and dev interviews, it seems like the game will have a pretty interesting questing system that goes further than the usual “Kill X of Y for Z reward,” and may even offer several possible ways to complete a quest. The graphics, at least from what I’ve seen, do not seem half bad either. What has me most excited, however, is the intense realm vs realm PVP. If anything saves the game, it’ll be that.
On top of not being what fans wanted from an Elder Scrolls, the game will also be buy-to-play and then pay-to-play. Perhaps it’ll be able to get away with it (at least for a while) due to the large fanbase that Bethesda has managed to create, but I doubt it’ll last a year before they decide to change to a free-to-play model. I’m actually very sad that ESO isn’t going to be free-to-play from the start, as it’s one of the few MMOs that can get away with it without having to resort to using a pay-to-win cashshop. Another disappointment is added to the list.
I just can’t see ESO being a success (past the first couple of months after release, at least) with games like ArcheAge and EverQuest: Next around the corner. Once people get a taste of the possibilities that EQN will give them, they’ll not want to return to their static Elder Scrolls world that never seems to change past a few major patches and maybe some expansions. Unless ZeniMax pulls something amazing out of their sleeve before release, their game isn’t looking to appetizing. I really wish millions of dollars would stop going towards the “proven method” for making an MMO and more large companies would make something unique and different. It’s really sad that EverQuest: Next will be the first AAA MMO to try something new in this industry, after we’ve been playing the same formula for over a decade.
If you’ve read this far, you’ll have noticed that I am anticipating Elder Scrolls Online to be a failure as an Elder Scrolls game. However, I want to stress that I do not think it’ll be a bad themepark game, but that’s all it will be in the end. Perhaps it’ll make profit, but it won’t be that amazing Elder Scrolls MMO we’ve dreamed about where we can live out our fantasy lives as Khajiit thieves skulking around the populated cities pickpocketing and stealing whatever we can, or Altmer doing magical research in some mage tower out in the middle of nowhere, occasionally running into our fellow players. Sure, it may be fun, but it just won’t be what we’ve wanted. Personally, I am hoping that this will mark the end of the Themepark Era, and be the final attempt that AAA Developers make at this type of game. Hopefully from this point on we can look forward to more and more games that will follow the sandbox style of MMO, who will travel in EverQuest: Next’s footsteps.
