Crossout Reveals Backstory

Crossout Reveals Backstory news header

Gaijin Entertainment just released a blog post about their upcoming PC MMO Crossout.

In 2021 a mysterious viral epidemic known as the Crossout epidemic swept the planet  Crossout triggered a human extinction event. Entire populations disappeared almost overnight.

Those who didn’t die immediately were plagued by hallucinations and headaches.  Many people went  mad. Some looked to suicide to escape their degenerative state. The source of the disease was unknown, but its effects were everywhere.  Cities that were once vibrant social and economic beacons of humanity were left ravaged and deserted.

In the first few days of the Crossout epidemic, media offered wild speculation about the nature of the epidemic. Some argued that the radiation from cell phones and televisions was infected with a deadly virus technically engineered by terrorists. Others believed the virus was airborne, caused by the disintegration of a large meteorite in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Was this the dawn of an evolutionary leap and a new kind of humanity?

Chaos engulfed the planet. Many tried to escape the effects of the virus by using different protective measures. They wore face masks to filter the air. They completely stopped using electronic devices and used more traditional means of communication. But all efforts were in vain: what was once an epidemic in a few days became a pandemic unlike anything ever experienced by man.

But humanity was not yet dealt the final blow. It somehow hung on, survived. Started to rebuild, and then…20 years after the Crossout catastrophe, the world is once again at the precipice between survival and annihilation.
The environment  dictates why vehicles are so essential in the fight for survival.  The devastation and decay represent much more than just a backdrop, it is the reason that survivors must create, upgrade and fight for their very existence in the game.

Each location in Crossout is illustrating a part of this new world’s history. The “Bridge” map shows players what happened during the first few days of the disaster. Plastered across the Bridge map, players will see signs and messages left by panicked people such as “the end of the world coming soon” and “No Entry” as well as barricades where people tried to prevent the spread and secure their safety. Other maps will show players the decay of all that has been created before the catastrophe and how the new humanity is adapting to it, desperately trying to revive the ruins of its magnificent past.

Crossout is currently accepting Close Beta sign-ups (http://crossout.net/en), scheduled for later this year.

Guild Wars 2 Reveals New Revenant Legend, Shiro Tagachi news header

Today ArenaNet revealed Shiro Tagachi as a new legend for the revenant profession coming to Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. The revenant channels legends from Guild Wars lore, affording player characters new abilities and weapons taken from Tyrian history. Long-time Guild Wars fans will recognize Shiro Tagachi from Guild Wars: Factions.

ArenaNet designer Roy Cronacher provides further detail on the dual-wielding sword weapon set and the skills specific to the Shiro legend, along with a handy wrap-up of all revenant legends, in a new blog posted on the official Guild Wars 2 website (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/slashing-devastation-and-a-memorable-assassin/). Shiro gives the revenant more mobility with assassin-like abilities that deal physical damage.  One such skill is Rift Slash, which allows players to slash foes with dual swords creating an unstable rift, damaging enemies nearby. Precision Strike is another skill that arms players with blades that they can quickly throw out to both damage and chill enemies.

ArenaNet will reveal the first in-game look at Shiro when Cronacher joins host Rubi Bayer on Points of Interest airing this Friday, July 17 at 12 p.m. PDT on the official Guild Wars 2 Twitch channel (http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2).

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void Prologue Available Today news header

In 1998, the world was introduced to StarCraft®—the groundbreaking science-fiction real-time strategy series about three unique rival species—the terrans, zerg, and protoss—locked into a perpetual war to secure their place in the galaxy. Now, 17 years later, the stunning conclusion to the StarCraft saga is almost here . . . and a new era for the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game is set to begin.

Legacy of the Void™, the standalone conclusion to the StarCraft II trilogy, will arrive by winter, and players can pre-purchase the game now via the official Legacy of the Void website. Featuring a galaxy-spanning protoss campaign and new multiplayer features such as the cooperative Allied Commanders and Archon Mode that give battlefield generals of all stripes whole new ways to play, Legacy of the Void is being built to deliver the ultimate StarCraft II experience. Pre-purchase digitally through Battle.net® or at participating retailers now, and you’ll gain immediate access to all three “Whispers of Oblivion” prologue missions featuring the legendary Dark Templar Zeratul. Those who pre-purchase digitally or lock in their pre-order with a deposit at select retailers will gain entry to the ongoing Legacy of the Void beta test.

Your Life for Aiur!

Picking up where Heart of the Swarm® left off, Legacy of the Void casts you in the role of Hierarch Artanis, leader of the technologically advanced protoss race. Years ago, the protoss homeworld of Aiur fell to the merciless zerg Swarm. Now, you have raised a powerful fleet of warships known as the Golden Armada and are poised to reclaim your world. But an ancient evil threatens your destiny and the fate of the entire Koprulu Sector. The galaxy’s only hope is for you to reunite the protoss factions and defeat the coming darkness.

To whet players’ appetites before the launch of the full campaign, a special action-packed prologue titled “Whispers of Oblivion” bridges the storyline between Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void. In these missions, players will join Zeratul to unravel the mysteries of the Xel’naga prophecy. Whispers of Oblivion will be available to everyone free of charge before the Legacy of the Void launch, but players who pre-purchase now will receive instant access to all three prologue missions in the Legacy of the Void beta test.

Legacy of the Void, the third and final chapter in the StarCraft II saga, is a standalone game, meaning you’ll be able to purchase, play, and harness the power of the protoss without owning any previous entries in the series.

Definitive StarCraft II Multiplayer Experience

In addition to the single-player campaign, Legacy of the Void will feature a host of new features that will make it the ultimate StarCraft multiplayer experience. Two heads are better than one, and Archon Mode applies this maxim to competitive gaming. In this brand-new two-player mode, players merge together to become a greater, unified force by sharing control over a single base. It’s the perfect mode for rookies to learn tactics from seasoned veterans—and a fun way to amplify the power of a burgeoning all-star.

Allied Commanders is a new, open-ended game mode with campaign-style objectives that breathes new life into the StarCraft cooperative experience. Here, each player will choose a powerful commander to lead their favorite army into battle and fight in diverse scenarios with dynamic, campaign-style objectives. Players can then level up these commanders to gain access to new units, abilities, and customization options for their armies.

The thrill of competing in a StarCraft II tournament is like no other gaming experience around, and Legacy of the Void makes it easier than ever for everyone to get in on the action. With Automated Tournaments, players from around the world can prove their might in no-holds-barred daily online competitions. Tournaments will be held for players of all skill levels, unlocking the potential for anyone to feel the excitement of surviving through elimination rounds and clawing their way to victory.

Heart of the Swarm Goes Standalone

For players who haven’t yet played the first StarCraft II expansion, Heart of the Swarm, it just became a little easier to stage a zerg rush. Starting today, the original StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is no longer required to play Heart of the Swarm—making this the perfect time to catch up on Kerrigan’s story and command a host of additional multiplayer units for all three factions.
