DOOM Announces Details for Multiplayer Closed Alpha
Today, Bethesda and id Software revealed details for the multiplayer Closed Alpha test for DOOM. Currently, the developers are only looking for players who purchased or pre-ordered Wolfenstein: The New Order on or before May 26, 2014, and no date has been revealed, either. Despite that, here’s what they did tell us:
Closed Alpha Gameplay Features
One Map: Heatwave
The Alpha will feature 1 multiplayer map: Heatwave. This industrial-themed map will place players in an arena setting featuring plenty of armor, ammo, and health pickups. Narrow corridors, walkways and small chambers all link to a central, open area of the map, providing players with a variety of environments that suit varying playstyles, as well as the focus point for fighting over key power-ups.
One Mode: 6v6 Team Deathmatch
Welcome to the core of DOOM’s arena-style multiplayer combat. In this mode, two teams of 6 players will try to dominate each other by fighting over the Revenant and Gauss Rifle power-ups, which provide devastating firepower that can turn the tide or ensure victory.
One Demon: Revenant
Being the first player to the Demon Rune will transform you into the powerful Revenant. Use your jetpack and dual rocket launchers to hunt down the other team for a limited time to either secure your team’s lead or mount a comeback.
One Power Weapon: Gauss Cannon
Available as a counter to the Revenant, this high-powered weapon destroys opponents in one blast. Use the alternate fire to see your targets through walls, but be warned, there is a limited number of shots, so use it to take down the demon rather than enemy players. Once you’re out of ammo, you have to wait for it to appear on the map again.
6 Weapons, 2 Equipment Items
The Closed Alpha will feature a limited arsenal of weapons and items featured in the complete game. They can be used both in standard and customizable loadouts.
- Weapons
- Vortex Rifle
- Super Shotgun
- Repeater
- Rocket Launcher
- Static Cannon
- Plasma Rifle
- Equipment Items
- Personal Teleporter
- Frag Grenade
Ashes of the Singularity Prepares for Steam Early Access
Stardock announced that the alpha of its upcoming massive scale real-time strategy game, Ashes of the Singularity, will launch on Steam Early Access for $39.99 on October 22, 2015. This 20% discount off the list price of $49.99 will be available for a limited time. The Early Access version will include several different planets to battle over as the Post-Human faction. Both the single-player AI and multiplayer settings will be available for players to choose from.
Ashes of the Singularity aims to deliver a real time strategy game with an unprecedented scale by being the first native 64-bit RTS game, as well as utilizing a new 3D engine (Nitrous) that fully leverages modern multi-core PCs. The game is also the first game to support Microsoft’s new DirectX 12 API, which will enable the game to deliver immense world-wide battles and high visual fidelity for each unit.
“Previously, RTS games had to choose between great visuals or lots of units, due to being limited to 32-bit and DirectX 9 based engines,” said Brad Wardell, President & CEO of Stardock. “It’s one of the reasons that RTS games have kind of hit a wall these past few years. The RTS could be pretty or be epic, but not both. Thanks to the Nitrous engine, we can support tens of thousands of units acting independently as part of a worldwide battle with a distinct visual style.”
Set in the distant future, the player starts on a contested planet with a single headquarters. The player must gather resources, build factories, research new technologies, manage a global economy, manufacture massive armies of machine-based constructs, and annihilate all opposition.
“We are very excited to go into early access,” said Wardell. “Given how ambitious this game is, we’re going to need all the help we can get from our player base to reach our goal of making this the most epic, large-scale real time strategy game ever.”
Besides being the first 64-bit RTS and being the first to use DirectX 12, Ashes of the Singularity also includes the first asynchronous multi-core real-time AI.
“While we expect the game to have a strong multiplayer community, we are adamant that the single player game have intelligent and challenging computer opponents to play against,” said Wardell. “We have team games with friends versus the AI, free for all, and every other combination in place already to help begin testing this part of the game early. This isn’t one of those games where the AI is an afterthought.”

Arma 3 2015-2016 Roadmap Revealed
With over two million copies sold to date, Bohemia Interactive today presented its plans for their tactical military shooter Arma 3 in the next year. The 2015-2016 roadmap, which was shared via a blog post written by the game’s Creative Director Jay Crowe, features two free platform updates that pave the way for the Arma 3 expansion in the second quarter of 2016.
First up will be the ‘Nexus Update‘, which is scheduled for release in November this year, and focuses upon the refinement of core features and multiplayer systems. This includes significant improvements to Arma 3 gameplay features such as stamina/fatigue, personal protective equipment, and more. Furthermore, the Nexus Update will deliver a revamped version of the End Game multiplayer mode, that was introduced earlier this year. The renewed End Game multiplayer will be paired with various improvements to general multiplayer systems, which can also be used in other official and unofficial Arma 3 multiplayer scenarios. Last but not least, alongside the Nexus Update, Bohemia Interactive plans to deploy a foundation build of ‘Arma 3 Units’ – a web-based service that aims to connect players with community groups.
The second platform update for Arma 3, codenamed ‘Eden Update‘, is penciled in for the beginning of next year (2016). The highlight of this update will be the official introduction of the brand new Eden 3D Editor. Designed as the logical evolution of the classic 2D Scenario Editor, which has been a core component of the Arma series since its debut in 2001, the new Eden Editor will give players far more control over their creations than ever before by enabling them to place and edit entities directly within the 3D game environment. Besides the new editor, the Eden Update will be complemented by several Arma 3 usability tweaks, and an overhaul of how players discover and join multiplayer sessions.
The Nexus and Eden platform updates lead up to the roadmap’s focal point: a major Arma 3 expansion in Q2 2016. Titled ‘Arma 3 Apex‘, this expansion will feature the 100 km2 South Pacific destination of Tanoa, which was first shown during the PC Gaming Show at E3 this year, plus a co-op campaign, new vehicles, weapons, and characters. One of the central themes of the expansion is near-future combat, which players will be able to recognize by the introduction of new vehicle classes such as VTOL aircraft and other new gameplay elements. As with previous Arma 3 DLC, the expansion will be accompanied by a major free platform update that seeks to address important ‘legacy’ issues related to Arma 3’s multiplayer, interaction mechanics, and discoverability of official and custom content. More information about the Arma 3 Apex expansion, including specifics on pricing, purchasing options, and early access availability, will be communicated next year.
“We’re optimistic and excited about our roadmap. Having recently hit the 2 million copies mark, we’re keen to grow even further! We’ve set out to refine our core gameplay, experiment with some fantastic new content, and deliver an unrivalled, open, diverse platform: truly, the apex of the Arma 3 experience”, concludes Arma 3’s Creative Director Jay Crowe in the full blog post.
