EVE Online’s Aegis Release Brings a Bold New Sovereignty

EVE Online’s Aegis Release Brings a Bold New Sovereignty news header

Some of gaming’s most compelling player stories have sprung out of the complex machinations of EVE Online’s nullsec sovereignty gameplay, including the devious Guiding Hand Social Club assassination, the staggering Bloodbath of B-R5RB, the near-instant fall of the implacable Band of Brothers Alliance at the hands of a traitor, and many more. These legends are born in the imaginations of the most complex, intricate opponents available—human beings—and are carried out by the strength of the real relationships of EVE pilots around the world as they build their own metaphorical sandcastles and work to knock down those of their enemies.

Yesterday, the final part of EVE’s Aegis release brought with it a fundamental change to how players war over the lawless solar systems beyond the reach of Empire control. Evolution has come to EVE warfare and the ramifications will affect every single one of EVE’s hundreds of thousands of players in the same shared sci-fi universe.

In nullsec space, thousands of solar systems can be claimed by players, their moons harvested for minerals, giant space structures built, local pirates killed for bounties, and more. Previously, warfare contesting ownership of space was relatively static, a sort of protracted siege based around grinding down structures in one location that favored bringing massive ships to bear on enemies and encouraged holding vast swaths of vacant buffer space.

Fueled by the technology introduced by a mysterious new force in EVE known as the Drifters, Aegis’ new Sovereignty system is much more dynamic. It offers more opportunities for small gangs of pilots to make a difference in the attack or defense of a solar system, spreads conflicts across constellations, and encourages the use of space by inhabitants instead of leaving it as a no-man’s land between superpowers.

With this new, multiple-capture-point system, the possibilities for fresh tactics, changes in the ship-fitting metagame, diplomatic shenanigans, and the likely rise of wholly new emergent careers for players are at an all-time high. The battlefields of EVE will likely be littered with exploded ships as players adjust to the tactical demands of a new system. As always, those who fail to adapt in New Eden are likely to either perish outright or accept temporary losses while they bolster their forces or forge new diplomatic ties. Those who evolve their gameplay will reap the benefits during this time of upheaval.

A video introducing the concepts in EVE’s new sovereignty system is available here.

GunScape Releasing to PC and Xbox on September 9

GunScape Releasing to PC and Xbox on September 9 news header

Blowfish Studios will release their first-person shooter and world-building hybrid Gunscape for Xbox One, Windows, Mac and Linux on September 9, 2015. Gunscape will come to PlayStation 4 and Wii U in Q1 2016.

In Gunscape , gamers create, share and enjoy their own levels in addition to discovering and playing maps created by others. Inspired by classic first-person shooters from the 90s and early 2000s, Gunscape takes all their most memorable elements and places them in an intuitive toolkit which can be used to create single player and co-op campaigns or competitive multiplayer arenas.

Gamers interested in a straight-forward shooter experience can leave the architecture to others while they focus on blasting their way through hordes of monsters or dueling with other players.  Gunscapse offers online or local multiplayer with split-screen supporting up to four players on PlayStation 4 and eight players on PC and Xbox One.

Unlike most first-person shooter world-building hybrids which require gamers to send levels to one another directly, Gunscape’s easy-to-use interface allows players to upload levels they create to the game’s servers, where they can be downloaded by everyone.  Gunscape is the world’s first hybrid of these two genres that allows console and PC owners to share the same stages.

“We are all hardcore gamers who are passionate about first-person shooters and world-building, but feel other attempts to blend the genres have come up short,” Benjamin Lee, CEO, Blowfish Studios, explains.  “Gunscape provides an easy to use toolkit for world-building that gamers will instantly recognize, with weapons, enemies and level design elements that will remind players of their favorite first-person shooter franchises.”
The Early Access build of  Gunscape is free on Steam for PC, Mac and Linux.  Players have the option to purchase additional themes that draw inspiration from classic first-person shooters.

Rocket League Review: Soccer with Rocket Powered Cars!

By Mohammad Abubakr

Rocket League Review

Sometimes you need a break from the more hardcore games to sit back and play something more relaxed. That’s not to say you don’t want something competitive that requires skill, just something that won’t have you white knuckled every second of the game. Rocket League is the perfect game to fulfill this requirement.  Developed and published by Psyonix, Rocket League is the successor to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. This game is a great way to take your mind off more demanding games, sit back, and relax with friends. Read on for my review of Rocket League.

Rocket League is a Sports-Action game available for both PC and PS4 with supported crossplay. Players control rocket-powered vehicles and play soccer by driving their vehicles into the ball.  As crazy as it sounds, Rocket League is a blast to play even if you are not a fan of soccer. The game leaves it to the players to find a way to score goals. There are no special abilities or skills, just a physics engine there to assist or destroy your hope of victory. Correct angles and timing is all you have to work with to attain victory.

Rocket League Review 01

I love the goal scored effect.

The game is very easy to pick up and play. Both the controls and movement feel very natural and intuitive. It is the perfect game to go alongside your other party games, whether you are playing online or local. I was very glad to see the game supporting split screen even on PC; this is a feature too many developers leave out. It is even possible to play split screen across multiple monitors, however you will need to edit the resolution settings manually through the config files. With these features, I can see myself using Rocket League as one of the goto games when friends are over (alongside the Wii U, which in my opinion is the best option for party games).

While the game is very easy to pick up and play, the skill cap is very high. As mentioned above, the game leaves it up to the player’s creativity and skill to make plays and score goals. Every player is put on equal ground with equally powered rocket cars. These cars can reach insane speeds with their rocket boosts and can also (double) jump into flips. These flips act like your car’s ‘kick’ but can also be used to move around faster. You can even fly momentarily (boosting while in the air) and climb walls at high speeds. It will take you some time to get used to all the movement options available for players, but once you master these techniques, only your creativity and twitch skills will limit you. Games that are easy to pick up but still feature very high skill caps are some of my favourite types of games. New players will not be deterred by the game’s difficulty and experienced players always have something to work towards.

Rocket League Review 02

I was able to get multiple monitor split screen working by modifying the config files.

In order to keep the game fresh, there are multiple maps available for players. All of these maps are basically played the same way and only differ visually. Unlike a regular soccer field, the maps in Rocket League are not very large. It only takes a couple of seconds to boost from one end to the other. The small map sizes keep the games action packed and make it so that players can never take their eyes off the game. You can play 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or even 4v4 on these maps. I personally prefer and recommend 2v2 as it keeps the game less chaotic and adds more teamwork and strategy compared to 1v1. I found myself playing 2v2 online (with 2 players split screen) most of the time.

If playing with friends or online is not your cup of tea, there are also bot matches and a season mode available. The season mode can be seen as the ‘campaign’ of Rocket League. Players can create their own team and play against other teams in a sports season. Stats for each team are recorded through the season and the best teams come out victorious. The settings for this season mode are configurable by the player.

Rocket League Review

Nice goal!

By either playing online or through the season mode, players can unlock many vehicle customizations such as custom bodies and rims. These customization options are not necessary for success as all players play on an equal ground, but it is always nice to have many cosmetic options. It is important to note that some cars do look bigger than others, but I have not done enough testing to determine if this affects the hitboxes. I personally love the custom boost smoke options; you can change between additional colours or even entirely different styles such as bubbles rather than smoke.

Conclusion: Excellent

In conclusion, Rocket League is one of the best games I have played this year. It is always great to have another game to play on the side or with friends when you need to relax and cannot commit to the more hardcore and demanding games. I do not see myself spending hours upon hours playing Rocket League on a daily basis, but it will always be on my list of games to play when I need to get away from other games for a bit.

Rocket League Review

Players can create their own team in “Season” mode.

Rocket League has found huge success through word of mouth and popular streamers. Nowadays it is essential to get your game on the top Twitch streams. The devs at Psyonix understand this as they’re frequently seen playing alongside popular streamers to promote the game. It is no surprise that the game secured the number one spot on Steam’s top sellers list upon release.

The game is not very expensive on Steam and is a great investment for all gamers. I highly recommend trying out Rocket League. Now that we have Steam Refunds, you can always give it a go before committing to it. Great job Psyonix!

Graphics: 4/5
Rocket League has great graphics. The art style makes the game stand out and easy to play. The ball and the maps are well designed so that there is no confusion. The only issue I have is that there is some sharking in the game as seen in the screenshots.

Control: 5/5
The controls are easy to pick and very intuitive. They do not limit a player’s creativity and skill, you will never feel like you are not in control. Everything that happens in the game can easily be seen to be a result of your input.

Features: 5/5
Rocket League has everything you would expect from a game in its genre and more. You can play online, against AI, and even play through a season mode. There is also a replay and stats system available in the game.

Customization: 5/5
Customization is not really necessary for a game like Rocket League but Psyonix still offers this to players. You can change a lot about your vehicle but everything is only cosmetic. I was really pleased to see no advantages or disadvantages being given to players based on their cosmetic choices.

Community: 4/5
There are always players available to play with online and there is a large following of the game. In a fast paced game such as Rocket League, chatting is kept to a minimum and you only really communicate with your premade teammates through external programs. The online play is very smooth most of the time but there were some hiccups on launch. The developers are working on resolving these issues as soon as possible.

The Mandate Plots a Course For Gamescom 2015

The Mandate Plots a Course For Gamescom 2015 news header

Perihelion Interactive has announced that it will be bringing its ground-breaking sci-fi RPG The Mandate to Gamescom, August 5-9 2015.

The Mandate has made the jump to the Unity 5 development platform, with Gamescom marking the first time that the six-player, cooperative, sandbox sci-fi RPG will be publically demoed. Perihelion will be showcasing the intricate squad tactics and AI within The Mandate, as well as demoing the exciting ship boarding combat to select members of the media in the business area at Gamescom.*

Planned for release in early 2016 on PC, The Mandate is set in a dystopian “Tsars in space” future controlled by a galaxy-spanning empire. Players take on the role of a captain at the helm of an evolving, dynamic ship that a crew of hundreds call home. As captain, you’ll command a crew of officers selected and honed by you, taking them into epic space battles, ship boarding operations and galaxy exploration.

Whilst epic in scale,  The Mandate  takes the concept of sci-fi RPGs to the next level by rooting the drama in your relationship with the crew – they and the galaxy map will adapt and react to the strategic choices you make, the battles you win… and those that you lose.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of  X-COM, Fallout, Mount & Blade, Sid Meier’s Pirates! and  Star Trek OnlineThe Mandate  raised over $700,000 during a  Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Perihelion Interactive’s development team is comprised of industry veterans, who have previously worked on projects like Assassin’s Creed II,  Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2, Mafia IIFar Cry 3 and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

The Mandate can either be experienced solo, or with five other friends for additional strategic and tactical challenges. Perihelion has designed The Mandate to be a no-compromise experience for multiplayer and single-player, and players should not notice a difference in enjoyment level or depth playing either alone or with friends.
