E3 2017: Day 3: Ubisoft/Sony Entertainment
So, yesterday was pretty entertaining. Devolver trolled everyone, and I’m pretty sure they only bought that slot to do just that. It was entertaining, and they clearly know their demographic. So, kudos to them. I am going to call it early though. While nothing so far has blown my mind, I think the most interesting things have come out of Sony’s camp. Am I hyped out of my mind for any of them? No, but I AM excited for a lot of it! A bunch of VR stuff? I can’t even use VR without feeling nauseous. Do we get another version of Skyrim? Two! The Switch, and on VR! We have too many versions of Skyrim, now. Please, let’s move on. … Please? And sure, Knack 2. I didn’t even care about the first Knack! The biggest things for me are probably Spider-Man and Age of Empires Remastered. As a bonus, there’s also a .Hack//GU remaster coming to Japan, and hopefully, we’ll get that also. I’d like a Quadrilogy too, though. Sony and Ubisoft were the serious players yesterday, and an absolute ton of games were teased, introduced, spoiled! Keyword of Day 3: Nostalgia. Let’s get started though!
Ubisoft brought the big guns, this year! I didn’t really care about a thing they offered last year, but they are tugging at the heartstrings of our collective nostalgia, with two offerings: Age of Empires, and Beyond Good and Evil 2! Now that second one is interesting. Never thought I’d see a sequel to it … and Age of Empires [Definitive Edition] is getting a complete remaster, up to 4k, with a new orchestral sound, a mode to play it in its original style, and so much more. It’s going to be phenomenal, and I can hear the cries of “Wololo!” across the Internet. We need a new strategy game, and I think it’s time for Age of Empires to come back to the forefront. While I’m not crazy about Assassin’s Creed, I love the Egyptian setting, so I’m curious to see where it goes. It also is going to have an absolutely ludicrous 800 dollar special edition [999 total of them], and I know they’ll sell like hotcakes. I don’t get it, but that’s only because a title I love hasn’t gotten something so insane. For what it’s worth though, it looks gorgeous. Though personally, I do want to see Moses teaching a young assassin how to kill. Steep? Not for me, but I can see an Olympic edition being fun [as far as DLC/extra content goes] The South Park game will surely be funny too, but I didn’t beat the last one either. What didn’t blow me away? Skull & Bones. If it were a free game, sure. But as a full paid game? Doesn’t seem worth it to me. And I don’t even want to talk about Mario + Rabbids …
Looks like Sony’s researching Phone-controlled games! I love this idea. I looked into one at Pax West last year, and it was a whole lot of fun. I can see big things coming from this medium. Spider-Man’s probably the most interesting title for me at least. I’m a gigantic comic book nerd, and Spider-Man’s always had a soft spot in my heart. And this one? Insomniac’s not made a bad game, though I’m not a fan of most of their stuff… they aren’t bad. I’m just not a fan. But Spider-Man? Oh man, that gets the blood pumping. Destiny 2 is coming two days early, which is awesome [Sept. 8], but PC users have to wait forever [Late Oct?], and PS4 users get cool stuff. A vehicle, strike map, PVP map, and gear! Guess my Battle.net version will have to wait, huh? Horizon Zero Dawn is getting DLC! I haven’t played it, but Colton, the other half of Bottom Tier absolutely swears by it. Author’s Note: I forgot to add that Undertale is coming to the Vita and the PS4! That’s huge news for an indie title like that, especially one that’s made so many waves. I’ve yet to complete it, but maybe playing it on PS4 will help …
Okay, so I lied. There is something I’m pretty hyped for, and that is the PS4 version of Monster Hunter World! We haven’t seen a Monster Hunter title that wasn’t on a Nintendo console in a few years, and I think it’s really going to draw people in. Sure, it’ll be on the XB1 too, but I’m more of a Sony console user, personally. Shadow of the Colossus Remaster is going to be fantastic and high-selling too! I never played Shadow when it came out, so I didn’t get into the hype, but I think it’s a very cool concept. We saw some more of the next God of War too, which continues to look beautiful. There was also a sneak peek of Call of Duty: World War II. It looks pretty grisly and horrific, but that’s what we need. After Call of Duty: Halo 3, I’m pretty excited to get boots back on the ground. So, a lot of stuff happened at E3 so far. The one thing I expected to happen didn’t, but it’s not too late. That Xbox One X has a horrific, high price. 500 bucks? Good lord. “Premium Console” my ass. I was expecting Sony to lower the price on their “premium console”, the PS4 Pro. You know what would sell me on the PS4 Pro? Tell the audience you’re working on PSOne/2/3 backwards compatibility for it. That would get people interested. Do you know how many games I want to stream on Bottom Tier, or to just… play on a modern console? Spoiler Warning: It’s a lot.
