Some developers see that piracy does always equal a lost sale. If someone has pirated a game and it works fine they arn't going to go out a buy it, for the bigger releases it's not to bad as they make most money on the consoles and can afford to loose a few PC sales.
But it's with the indy and PC exclusive titles that really feel the force, people were pirating World of Goo a game made by a indy group and was selling for as little as £15 on Steam. I didn't buy it but I didn't go a pirate it either as if I like the look of a game then why should the developers loose out on my cash?

It all comes to do down to: how far are you willing to go for your cause? Few people believe enough in the law to be able to follow it in any given situation. I pirate because I refuse to buy what I can get for free. That, and 99% of the games and music and movies and books I download aren't worth the media they are printed on to me in the end.
I'm really picky about stuff...a lot of times I download over 10 gigs of something just to delete it.
Yesterday, actually, I bought a Beavis and Butthead box set. Its all the episodes, AND the movie, and it came with two bonus bobble heads. Originally, it was $120. It was on sale for $40, and it was "buy one get one free", so me and HTown split it for $20.
It was totally worth $20 to me. If I could find deals like that on other TV shows (Aqua Teens, etc) I'd totally buy it.
And, for the record, I'd already downloaded all the episodes AND the movie. I just felt like it was worth it to me.
If everything wasn't ****ing ridiculously priced, I'd totally rather have the box, and the inserts, and the bonus features, and the physical discs. But, its all ridiculously priced.

Finding CDs isn't hard.
I own over 2,000 of them and they range from bands and artists you can get in an HMV, and ones you'll probably never hear of.
You can get pretty much any CD you desire on the net, for cheaper too. It's your own choice whether or not you use it.

Pirating over the internet, on the other hand, doesn't feel wrong. I agree that its just as wrong as shoplifting, but it just doesn't feel as bad. Probably because a ton of people do it and there's no social stigma attached to it. In fact I daresay that there are a lot of people who think shoplifting is wrong but downloading music over the internet is not. I wouldn't date a girl who shoplifted. I wouldn't care if they pirated movies and music. In any case it has absolutely nothing to do with your argument that a thief doesn't think that stealing is wrong.

Developers are spending money on "protection" for the companys that make "protection software" and are hitting their own foot with a hammer.
