Why Do I Suck at Dragon Age

For a sword and board fighter, get your dexterity to the maximum you can spare (30 or so is WAY too low), your strength to 42 at maximum, your constitution at 15 maybe 20 and your willpower at 15.

Ok I'd only been raising Strength and Vitality...the last two levels I raised dex only and I started to live longer.

I just got Wynne too so now its a lot easier with a healer :) Thanks guys.

Dexterity is a must, if you don't have enough you'll be missing just about on every swing. Dex also helps in dodging enemy attacks. Get Heavy/Massive Armor ASAP, if you didn't.

Sten is alright as a character in the beginning of the game, but he doesn't get a second specialization point like the other characters do.

Leliana is pretty fragile, but she makes a decent archer if you put the talent points in the archer tree.
