Amazing! More and more companies are learning that F2P is the better choice. But for companies who are already P2P, they usually go hybrid because they dont want complaints.

STO was flawed since the very beginning, gameplay-wise.
Freemium STO will not be as good as Freemium LOTRO, which was very well polished.
Eh saw it coming i went back last month for a bit and they finally got around to introducing:
A.) End game content, still not a lot but it got some interesting raids and mish
B.) Difficulty settings
C.) Easier ways for newbs to party with high ends (match leader lvl system)
D.) pvp more balanced (klings still got an advantage but eh it all they got so...yeah)
E.) Death penalties
F.) Better loot system (at least i noticed a vast difference between advanced and normal loot drops)
G.) Better dps system aka weapon power drain, instead of a slow recharge after a volley of say 6 energy weapons you get 100 power back after their active period like 2-3 sec.
But in the end they implemented all this a little to late, and a lot of the higher ups left and some big fleets (clans, guild etc) have broken up.
So yes a ddo/lotro like payment system would be a nice breath of fresh air into sto both for the community (more players) and for their wallet.
My only question is in order to play where my characters are currently at would i have to "buy" the parts leading up to them? Or would my characters be whipped?
