Yea...that's pretty much true.
I don't know if you can upgrade your gear in WoW now as i didn't play since years, but you couldn't upgrade your gear, only enchant it and these enchants were VERY easy to get. You still need to get equipment and it does make a difference...but for example on Aion you need the gear, but then you need to grind your a$$ infinite amount of time to overenchant your gear to...let's say +10,+15 in order to oneshot people that can't afford that...which is the majority of the playerbase.
I remember playing old WoW, with rank 11 gear if i recall correctly (it was very EASY to get) and beat the crap out of Tier 2-3 which was VERY hard to get.
And in TBC with arena system getting gear was even easier, except maybe some PvE raiding trinkets which were pretty cool.
I had to read this over like 6 times to make sure it was as stupid as I thought it was the first time.
On topic: I'd go for WoW, like suggested many times, Aion as a second choice, and finally Rift.
And...realistically, WotLK WAS easy. Ulduar was the hardest raid of the expansion without a doubt. The only remotely difficult encounter in ICC was Lich King.
