Because it's an expansion. That's what happens when expansions come out.
(There aren't any raids in Rift yet anyways. Just instances. In order to do a raid, I'm sure you'll have to reach max to get to end-game content that's not even out yet.)
Why spend days leveling with nary a player in site? Why run and fly about a world that is large but empty?:
Go to a populated server and your problems are solved. Because all of the content is now in Azeroth, it's the main place to be. Old school cities are packed while places like Shattrah/Dalaran are empty. Why go to Shattrah/Dalaran when you have everything you need in Stormwind/Orgrimmar? On my server, the "world" isn't "empty". It's incredibly packed.
Why put up with inflexible talent trees when you can instead mix-and-match however your please?:
Because they work. You were able to mix and match back then, making hybrid builds during Vanilla/BC. But as time moved on with more talents/abilities being released, and the need to work on balancing issues with classes, talent trees were too bloated. There were too many talents that were just in the way and they weren't necessary, which is why they came out with the 31 point system in one tree.
As of right now, classes who mix and match in Rift are pretty broken. As Cereldi said:
There are also CCing issues with a lot of skills (probably all of them) having no DR (Diminishing Returns), so you could keep an enemy stun locked, feared, etc, etc, etc from 100 to 0.
It'll take a lot of time for this game to be some sort of competitor for Blizzard since they're already years ahead of Trion in terms of content and player base.
