How do you install a mod for Minecraft?

I tried all this, but I can't even get it work...why does this have to be so confusing to install a mod...

Delete the Meta-INF in the jar?

Delete meta-inf folder like Klaime said or if that doesn't work go ask on the minecraft forums where you have a better chance of getting an answer.
