Yes, I'm an online gamer! Whats wrong with that?

hi everyone, i was jus so furious abt why my frds n parents treat MMORPG as something anti-social, or time-wasting stuff. they were kind of like discriminating people (basically me) who spens times on building relationships in the gaming world, which somehow make me feel so frustrated and isolated. coz all ppl around me apparently noe nothing abt gaming. all i can lean on is forums, internets, how sad.
hv u guys been told not to play games by parents or frds before?

On topic: Welcome to my world. I am being discriminated each day and called a potato who does nothing but sits by the computer.

You will learn to give no **** about just like I did. As a matter of fact I've also started to discriminate whatever my parents/friends do whenever they feel like picking on me. Not the best thing to do but it works and I keep them at bay.

yea, I jus moved to the states, english is my second language. people not only discriminate me as an online gamer, but also becoz i speak/ write bad english. okay i admit it, and pls forgive me, i m already working very hard...

Well, it is a time-waster, and it is anti-social if you are a solo kind of player. Even if you are a group-player, it's still a sort of isolation, because you're not really physically interacting with much depth, it's all in text or game-functions between the characters.

But it's entertainment, and we all need it in a form or another, be it books, music, video games or movies. So unless it's interfering with your school work or whatever then it shouldn't be a problem? :-/

There's no need to apologize for that.

Video games bring a lot of different people together so I see nothing wrong with enjoying them. I used to live with my father and step mother who believed video games were "evil" yet they never really stopped to learn what really goes into making them. I stopped speaking to them a long time ago (for many reasons I will not discuss) because people like that are just overall thickheaded and only appreciate the things they believe in.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying video games, but don't let them be the only world you know. Sometimes it's pretty interesting to learn more about the people controlling the characters as more often than not, you'll find some that share similar interests in all aspects of life.

Well, since I found out that people find it acceptable in online worlds to just turn their backs on you after some 2 year effort, I would say I don't really prioritize any event, no matter how "important" in gaming over anything that benefits me in my life.

I don't do voice chat, I stay detached in guilds, I ONLY come on when I feel like it and I will push a g2g cya guys as soon as anything comes up and I won't work hour long raid-like type of stuff at all.

Turns out, that I
A) have more fun this way.
B) Stopped seeing gaming as a major part of my life (years ago)

I don't have a richer social life, but I value my friends more and I am more ready to reward commitment from them, because it's just easier to see for me with more experience (I guess that is just something that comes along naturally with maturing). This includes the hand full of people from the web who I kept in contact with.

However, considering gaming:
If you don't have a considerable relationship with them outside of the game, they are not your friends, you are just another "bot" and that's it.

I also got other hobbies.. I just came back from my first amateur boxing fight last week..

I like telling people I play games and fight/train in boxing... gives them this whole other idea.. like whoa.

gamers are always discriminated....bad press and media and social disapproval are the reasons imo.

I get bashed on by my parents all the time too~ saying stuff like how I should go out more, meet/make more friends, telling me how the society doesn't work that way....

when it comes down to it, they are right. The world we live in is a world of information and relationships. You cannot develop new relationships and connections if you don't actively meet new people.

but then, shouldn't we also take personality into account? What if you are naturally introverted~?? what if you are more comfortable alone and doing things by yourself rather than being in the crowd and socializing??

is it a sin if your personality is the way it is?? :-/

Don't blame the games, blame the players.

Anyways, just do whatever you feel like. I'm somewhat a mix between anti-social and a socialist(was there such a word?). Heck, sometime I even get a good groove going with some peeps I met online and live in the same country as me, we even meet out and hang out in real life(eg; SEA HoN players).

Let 'em discriminate you, give no bother, or you can always talk back and insult their hobbies(not that it's mature at all).

If you're able to balance gaming and IRL friendships, more power to you. If you can't, interaction with real people is more healthy than virtual ones.

lol don't mind them. being an online gamer rocks and you get to kick buts all around the world in PvP hehehehe

Thing is, a lot of gaming is just plain time-wasting and there comes a point in the game where it stops becoming fun and just becomes a mind-grinding (though still stimulating) chore. Most people push on in the game, to complete it for closure or to get that carrot on the stick, but some choose to question the purpose of it all, and that often diminishes the urge to continue.

We should examine ourselves and what we do, because it's very easy to get caught up and for the act to lose meaning.

if you get to the stage where instead of saying "i think ill play this game now" you are now saying "i have/must play this game now" then its getting too much.

its supposed to be for enjoyment and is no less/more "anti-social" than reading on your own or listening to music in a room with the walls painted black.

but if you HAVE to play because you guild tells you to and you gotta raid.... then you arent playing when you want to..... the game is playing YOU man!!

I usually differentiate my time between work, gaming and my actual social life. There is nothing wrong with gaming, but if you want to know how to hold a real actual friendship and relationship outside of a game you should just try to make some friends outside. Gota take things into moderation. Gaming really is something that should be a pass time and not taken seriously. I used to be a hardcore gamer and would smack myself if i ever said that, but now ive realized theres a big world out there; Nothing is getting done on the PC.

Rarely any of my friends know about gaming to be honest; if anything probably just call of duty. It just leaves more room for explaining and talk.

My Friend asked me before; When you log off your game, do you feel that you did something that you could feel accomplished about?

I used to say yeah.. I just raided blah blah, got this epic blah blah.

But then I realized its just abysmal compared what can be accomplished otherwise.

It's alright for people to say "But I prefer being alone, and I don't like socialising; that's just my personality"

That's usually the case when people spend too much time playing games by themselves, and they don't go out and socialise. I think if they did so, then they'd realise that it's not just their "personality" but rather what they're used to.

The reason a lot of people are socially awkward is because they play too many games, and then they try to claim otherwise, and say that it's just the way they are.

If it's what you like to do then do it. I stopped caring what people think about my hobbies a long time ago.

Socializing with people may be all good and healthy for you, but what of the financial and health issues that come with it? If you go out with friends, you are bound to spend money. Be it you are watching a movie, going to a bar/club, going to a bowling arena, etc, and you are doing this almost every day....that is a fkton of money you are shelling out. Now if you are working a steady salary-rate job, that would be fine, but not everyone is like that~ (take my brother for example...he spends $300+ PER week and he has a job that pays him $10 per hour for 32 hours/week...do the math)

you might say, well you don't have to spend money everytime you go hang with your friends, go play sports or something. Okay, I can agree with that~ sports are never bad for you unless you overexert yourself and do something painful. But then, can you play sports with your friends EVERYTIME you guys meet? Then, I would ask, what else is there to do? Drinking, partying, smoking weed....yah? Well, those 3 are not healthy for you as we all know...especially if a person does it in excess. Drinking too much will kill your liver, as well as induce alcoholism, partying too much is a mix of drugs and alcohol....so that's a no-no...weed~ now people say weed is not bad for you and I see a lot of people doing it....but I KNOW its bad for you, since not all weed you get is PURE. Most drugs these days have some other chemical substances in them that may be doing god-knows-what to your body.

on that note, gamers~ what is their downside? they can't socialize? it's not that they CAN'T socialize, it's that they don't WANT to. I bet you all gamers have SOME friends they can chat with in real life, not just virtual. What other downside do they have? degrading health? LOLz at least it's loads better than those that drink, have sex, do drugs all day long.

just saying~ I feel like the society penalizes those who play games alot as opposed to those that drink, party, have sex alot...

I talk to some girl who has this "*****" attitude about gamers..

She is the type of girl who goes to the gym and drinks on weekends.. blah blahh

she says .. "I never want my bf to be a gamer, its so immature at my age(24)..

"Sooo? you don't want your bf to have a personality/hobby?"

and her excuse was... ahem

"Well, going to the gym and sports can be a hobby "

"Wait, what about his liesure time? you can't possibly tell me that there are guys out there that will workout/play sports 24 ****ing 7... what about when they are home?!, should they just face-stalk/tweet people while at home like you do?"

I don't give a shit what people say, when a girl meets a guy.. he will sugar coat his life to death! "Yes I gotto the gym and I currently have a 4.0 GPA blah blah blah" I never tell girls I play games.. im the laziest guy(when it comes to school and work) but I sugarcoat my phrases when I talk to girls.. jeez...

but Ive openly told just about every girl what my usual day is, never had one complain about that.
Its dumb to sugar coat, which is basically lieing; might as well start with the truth so you dont end up on a lie you'll get busted eventually.

I play games in my spare time when I have nothing better to do after school/studies and on weekend.

If I have something else planned, then I'll go with it.

Also, I've met people I play online with a couple times and went to have a beer or two. Fun times.

Everything is fine in moderation, it is when you do something to much that it becomes a problem.

hey guys thank you for being so supportive!
ummmm, I m a kind of naturally introverted person maybe. I am not comfortable with making new friends, especially I m new to this country, Language barrier somewhat frustrates me a lot, I dont feel like talking or socializing in any occasions. Even for now, i actually m really nervous for being picked on grammatical mistakes...
I can only see myself as a complete guy in the gaming world, I achieve so much more in that sort of space.

anyways, happy to take u guys' advices and i ll try to get myself more involved in the outside world, at least will try to make more interactions with real people...

Just do what makes you happy. Dont give a damn what others say.
