The hackers were really what destroyed PSU. It was ignored for too long and the game and economy went to trash. By the time they got around to stopping it they couldn't do anything about the damage that was done so they just left all that money floating around in the economy and it became impossible for legitimate players to afford anything. Alot of folks left and just never came back because of it. It also would have helped a ton if the platforms weren't separated. Most of the damage was done in the PC version and it showed as the 360 version had a much larger population for a much longer time, or many of the PC people moved over if they did not quit altogether.

Other parts of it were just poorly designed. It was almost impossible to craft anything useful in the really early days. Levelling Photon Arts was a terribly designed system and led to people coming up with places where they could bot it up (particularly Bullets and Ranged Arts). The luck system was unbelievably dumb as it encourages people only to place on certain days. Why would you make a system that makes people want to play less....

Its certainly not the first game that has died because of this stuff.

if you want this game to live longer then a year has to go b2p or f2p not p2p. I like phantasy star games but i not going to pay monthly fee for lobby games. only worth for p2p are open world action games like tera online and dc unvirse

This game looks great!

Big fan of the Phantasy Star franchise. It looks like they finally made it more "interactive" and smooth. Can't wait.

Because of the meseta glitch the PC users discovered in the PS2/PC servers, the price for crafting materials soared way too high. Crafting wasn't good to begin with but with people charging ridiculous prices for items and equipment, it became a problem for a lot of people so they left and went to the XBOX server. I remember a lot of the people I know doing that and even after they patched the game those servers never really recovered.

However, the XBOX version is still up and so is the JP version. The only thing that failed was the joined PS2/PC servers. The others have been up since like late 2006.

If the game is good, what does it matter if it's lobby based? It wasn't even that much to play PSU on a monthly sub. It was something like 50 USD for 6 months for full access. Why wouldn't you pay that if the game is good?

Despite PSU's glaring flaws, a lot of people enjoyed it. The PSP versions of the game still have a pretty strong fanbase as well, and a good number of people pay to play online. Room Based or not, people will pay for a game they enjoy.

You say nobody will pay a sub for the game but I would, so nobody is no longer valid. You can try to say most people would not but unless you have some hard data backing that up it's nothing more than an empty speculation.

No matter the case, I just want to hear the game is coming for the US. If we never hear that it doesn't matter to much :(

Why do you keep saying no one wants to pay for a room based game? What exactly is the problem with room based games being on a P2P model anyway? What exactly is your problem with room based games?

PSO was P2P and Room Based, people loved it and still do which is why they have a Legit P server running for it. Oh and not to mention they are making a sequel with elements from PSU in it.

The business model for PSU wasn't what brought down the NA PC/PS2 servers, hackers did that. The other servers are still up. People still play the PSP versions.

Last time I checked Monster Hunter Online isn't over here in the US cause they knew no one would play it. So, yeah, that's exactly what we are saying. Durp. If I need a scifi kick like it seems is the only reason for liking this game except for simple nostalgia then i will wait for Firefall, which is F2P.

There's a post on Capcom unity forums that explains why they haven't made that step and it is basically because their NA branch has nowhere enough people to undertake all the process of localization/development and customer support.

AKA, too much of a initial investment/hiring effort is required for a game that's not exactly new.

Nonetheless, they haven't completely shut down the possibility and the launch of MH Tri on the Wii with the online mode was a big success sales wise, which might be enough to include NA/EU in the branch's future developments.

There are a LOT of western MH players, and all the PSP games sell rather well.
The reason they didn't is because of how poor MH3 did, which is because it was on the Wii where as 99% of MH players have PSPs and PS3s

Plus you guys keep assuming PSO IS JUST LIKE YOUR F2P GAMES. It's not. There's a lot more character customization, weapons are much more unique(pso anyways, they were bland in PSU), boss battles are more engaging( though not as much as in MH), there is more content and things to do (and PSO2 will probably expand upon that more), and a great visual scheme and soundtrack.

You two can keep hating without valid points, so until then, go away drolls

P2P isnt a feature it's a business model. One that is not needed to host games well and for a game to do well or for a company to make money. While I agree that PSO was customizable in general neither PSO nor MH come close to having the best customizing that I have seen.

I agree that I would be willing to B2P. That seems like a viable middle ground here. P2P is not worth a month of simple nostalgia.

My worst fear is having PSO2 free to play with cash shop!

That doesn't mean just that.

It means the game will be BUILT like an F2P with cash shop.

Hello slow leveling pace with XP potions.
Hello weekly cash shop updates, goodbye weekly content updates.
Hello 9001 items we only get acess through cash shop.

I much rather have a solid small community of P2P gamers...

To all those claiming it will die: PSU died for 3 main reasons

1. Slow to none updates
2. Hackers
3. Minimal support, I remember events where half the server could not participate due to billing errors that lasted for months.

Any game dies if it suffers from these stuff, look at Xbox 360, it's getting updates and its lively as ever.
