Darkfall Online Promotion
I am surprised that nothing has been posted about this. I've been playing Darkfall for about three weeks now, and having a blast. The population is big again and every night is a bunch of fun.
The new promotion they're doing, which will last til they release Darkfall 2.0, does the following to the game:
- Removes the cost to purchase the client... that means you don't have to pay the $25-50 or w/e it cost to buy the game anymore.
- Lowers the monthly fee to $10 (from the previous $15)
- Increases all skill gains by 20 times (this means you can max anything in an hour or less, even spell chanting. Also means you can have a PvP character ready in about a week if you start from scratch. Less if you start with some money and/or friends.
- Meditation (Their off-line skill and stat gain system) has been increased by ten times. That means it takes about 17,000 gold (not hard to get) and 4 days to max one stat to 100. It used to takes months and months to get a stat maxed at 100.
- All rare loot drops (astrolabes, orbs of might, rune stones, portal shards, etc...) have increased their drop rate by 4 times, globally. That means if a monster had a 25% chance of dropping a runestone before the update, it now has a 100% chance (no monster had 25% chance for a runestone tho. But killin golems, I generally get an avg of 1 runestone every other kill)
- Lowered the time it takes for the villages (Control points that can be taken for guild to collect taxes) to reset from 12 hours to 6 hours. They give between 1,000g and 2,000g every hour, depending on the size. And there is a shit load of them on the map. Makes for fun PvP and a decent source of income .
Might be more I'm forgetting.
Anyways, with these updates, the game is pretty damn fun now. You can now skill up your character by actually playing the game, rather than mindlessly macroing every night. I've almost got all my magic schools maxed, and I've been playing lazily. Maybe an hour or two a night.
If you've ever had an interest in Darkfall, but were turned off by the grind, now is the time to play. With the booming population back, the increased skill and stat gains, there's nothing bad about the game. The PVE is fun and interesting (from bugs or worms that pop out of the ground and attack you, to dragons, to huge golems, to minotaurs that turn to stone and explode, there's just so much of it...). The world is beautiful and fun to explore. There's really nothing negative that could be said about the game except for it's focus on PvP, which is a personal taste, not really a negative about the game.

Also, boats are easy to get now. Since I've started playing with my friend (we both started from scratch on new characters) we've bought 4 boats. A launch, a Sloop, a Schooner and a Junk. We're in a viking themed guild, so they'll hopefully be put to use in the future.
Here's our Junk, as seen from the shore:
