I went on a CV drop this morning to find a new job.
I've worked in my current job for nearly 2 years now, but my managers have become complete douches in the past months and it's beginning to thoroughly annoy me. I've never been so tempted to tell them where to shove it and walk out, but thankfully I haven't done so, as I know I still need a reference from them for my next job.
But yeah, I know all too well what it's like for the management to completely contradict themselves, as that's part of the reason I'm finding a new job myself.
Edit: It's a shame really because I'm really good friends with all of the staff there, and I feel like I'm being forced out of my job by the manager.

You could report it to someone. It's illegal to abuse your ability to fire someone like that. If your friend did say something to your boss and you have multiple witnesses to testify, he could probably sue even.
But really, you and your co-workers should either stand up for him or quit together. You're all fooling yourselves if you feel you have any sort of job security in that environment. Like you said, it's just a matter of time.

Definitely sounds like he has a case considering he has the punch card and multiple witnesses at his back. Though that could all come down to who has the better lawyers, how it's presented, and where it happened.

It's not illegal as in against the law and filing a law suit against the company isn't the right course of action and will get you nowhere, besides out of a lot of money that you have to give to lawyers and to file paperwork. It isn't the same as discrimination.. or, most likely, a judge won't even see your case.
He can file for wrongful termination with the EEOC http://www.eeoc.gov/. With you guys backing him up as witnesses or having some kind of proof, he MIGHT have a case. Stepping up to help him will likely get you fired as well, though, as soon as your boss finds out. It's too easy to replace employees in America, since so many people are out of a job here.
Some states have good job security, and you can usually win things like this. Dunno where you live, but I can definitely tell you that Arizona is not one of those states lol. Employers can fire you here for whatever reason they want besides discrimination, and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it.
