Not quite sure what he means by hybrid. Tiered P2P? P2P with cash shop? B2P with cash shop? Freemium?
All I know is the game will probably not survive a monthly fee.
Either free to play with limitations that you have to pay for to unlock or b2p like gw2 with cash shop
Hybrid sounds like a freemium
Freemium = Locked content.
This means the game would fail already.
first feed off the p2p player then couple month later change to f2p lol
I honestly hope they don't, the restrictions CoH had for F2P were pretty bad, not SWTOR bad but still bad nonetheless. I'm hoping they release Wildstar as a B2P game because it would be a good balance in the spectrum without having too many negatives that both F2P and P2P games tend to have. On the other hand I don't mind that they do the Freemium paymodel that LoTRO and DDO has but I'd rather they not make everything so freaking hard to grind for like those games did.
Runescape has had a Hybrid Model since it started, and it still does very very well. The trick is to make the subscriptions not only affordable, but worth it. Subscribing in RS brings (brought) access to so much more content. All Wild Star needs to do is have an affordable subscription with extra content, but not limit the F2P people too much.
If you have a system that rewards people for playing but also encourages them to delve deeper into the game and pay a little here and there, then you'll be popular in both p2p and f2p. As long as you keep cash shop items out of the game and keep the subscription as a basic package, then you can do even better.
You could even sell content packages, but at least don't limit the level cap with it.
Idea: You can go to new maps with new storylines and quests and new towns if you subscribe. If your subscription time runs out, you can keep the items you got, but won't be able to go back and get more until you re-subscribe.
You could also have Subscriber Servers and F2P Servers. Subscribers could play on F2P servers if they want, or just hop back onto Subscriber servers. F2P ones would limit access to the subscription areas until you hopped onto the Subscriber server. This is the RS style of subscription, but it works and has worked for over a decade.
PS: I don't like RS, but know that the way they set it up was very successful.
As long as they don't break the game with a P2W model, I don't really care how they do it. The game looks amazing, as long as the deliver on the features and gameplay they are advertising, it will be a great game. Just mho.
