SSDs

I'm finishing another build. But I need advice on SSDs. It's going to be primarily ssd in terms of storage, no more disks.

What I'm trying to figure out is how many I need.

I can get 2 240 gigs for 330$, but I can also get 3 120s for 300$ flat.

I don't want ANYTHING other than my O.S/programs on 1 drive, but I feel 120 gigs is way too much for that. Could I raid 0 the other two? It's going to be exclusively for games.

I'd still suggest a standard HDD for data like pics, music etc. An SSD is overkill for those and can shorten the lifespan by quite a bit. Installers aren't also that fun to have on an SSD as well. You're most likely going to use it one time than trash it. Nice waste of read/write cycles on your SSD. It'd be best if I forget about torrent-based installers/downloaders...

Raid 0 for SSD... want to spend like at least another 100USD on a decent RAID-controller for those SSDs? Otherwise you have thrown away a disk as you're going to hit the SATA3 limits with anything above a half-assed SSD.

Thanks. So now I have it down to 1 120 gig for my hdd, 1 240 for games, and a 1TB for media.

That should be good.

If you get a good 1TB HDD, you might want to consider a 2/3TB one actually. In certain cases they don't cost that much more. It also might be interesting to throw normal programs on those that you won't use as much and where loading speeds don't matter. PDF reader, Teamspeak, utility apps like CPU-Z... you get my drift.

SSDs are nice and fast but require a delicate balance of IO-balancing and all. :/ Good thing they are getting more durable by the year. lol

Another thing. Should I stick with the Intel 3570K or upgrade to the x79 platform? It's only 180 more, but I'm gunna be gaming. Is there a massive difference? My gpu will be a Gtx 770

Another thing, is a 770 suitable for 2560 x 1080? I REALLY want one of those 29" ultra wide monitors I can afford them but I don't want to Sli..

If you're going x79, you'd better buy a GOOD CPU. And no, performance gain will be minimal.

Your 770 will be a tad insufficient for 2560*1080. Pretty much anything above 1920*1080 (including multi-screen setups) requires either the top of the line or SLI setup.

4820K looks pretty decent to me and from reviews, O.Cs like a Beast. In this case though I'll guess I'll just have to Sli. I might just get a run of the mill 27" though

I've decided to get 1 4 x 2 gig of corsair platinum and instead just sli 2 760s

SSD really good for game installations, virtual workstations, and video editing.
