I don't know too much about cats but my grandma has an old cat(22 years old) and when he's feeling bad she takes him outside and he eats plants and grass and stuff. She says it isn't good for him but afterwards he usually goes back to acting normal. Not sure if that's a typical cat thing though.
Me personally I'd take him to the vet and see what the deal is and if they say anything bad just enjoy the days left with the guy.
cats usualy like eating grass to help throw up hairballs or something bad they ate. i think it may also something instinctive to obtain vitamins they cant get from eating meat. i dont think he needs that right now but i can show him some grass i guess :P thanks for the advice
My cat died about 2 weeks after not eating for 3 days before that. She seemed to have trouble walking mostly and didn't move around much, just kept near her water bowl. I did give her food, but she didn't seem to want to eat.
The thing is I would have had to pay near 200$ for a vet...
To be honest, with the untreated tumor for 1 year, I'd just put him out of his misery. There's like no chance for him to survive and keeping him alive much longer won't do him any good.
It's up to you. Personally, it sounds like it's just nearing his time. My ferret acted similarly when it came time for him - didn't eat or drink much and spent more time than usual sleeping.
Most people feel that they MUST put their pets down. However, letting them die "naturally" isn't the end of the world. It doesn't reverse all the love and care you gave your cat. So, if that's how you want him to die, that's alright. Millions upon millions of humans die like this all the time, yet we don't feel like we failed them by not "putting them out of their misery" beforehand. Instead we just focus on making their remaining time as happy as possible. If you think the cat is pain, perhaps request pain medicaiton from the vet.
Having him/her put to sleep isn't a bad idea either. The idea of it can put some off - almost feeling like betrayal of the love you have for your pet. But in the end, you ARE putting them out of their misery.
Sounds similar to my puppy right now. She's only nine, but she has nose cancer. Her nose is now deformed where the cancer has spread (but she's still super cute).
My baby wasn't eating, looking good, or taking her pain meds, so my mom and I were prepared to euthanize her. My mom took her to the vet, the vet inspected her and he declared she didn't need to be euthanized just yet. He gave her two shots: one so she would eat and the other for pain. We switched to a liquid pain medication that I give to her through a syringe and she is doing soo much better now. She doesn't eat much, but she does eat. She runs around, barks, looks cute as fvck, etc.
So my opinion is take your kitty to the vet and ask what he/she recommends.
Vet ftw. My fiance is a vet and her biggest complaint is people waiting till it's too late before bringing their pets in to seek advice.
thank you all for all the thoughtful advice. i called the vet today and yeah they said even though its hard for them to decide they suggest bringing him over for a full checkup and then they would probably suggest putting him down. its kinda what i expected already since the last few trips to the vet they were already suggesting this. however because he doesnt seem to be in much pain or anything i feel like i shouldnt do this and just spend that last bit of time together with him and let him die a natural death. i mean he still purs like a boss when i give him attention :( its completely different from my previous cat that died when i was around the age of 12 (she was 18). she actually had the same problem.. a tumor in her tummy and she meowed like she was in a lot of pain. but my current kitty doesnt do that, he just chills and sleeps all day.
the vet also said i gotto keep trying to feed him anything he want, it doesnt matter what. so im gonna go to get him some fried fish. he always went crazy around me for fried fish pieces :(
ill let you guys know how it ends, as hard it is for me.. writing about this actually helps.
also i am sorry to hear about your story TuxedoSam, i hope your puppy still has a long and beautiful life ahead of her
just telling you all hes in kitty heaven now. last few days he started having all this brown stuff on his lips next to lots of drooling that really smelled rotten noticeable from a meter away which is probably stomatitis. a very painful infection in the mouth thats in this case caused by kidney failure. so he was suffering a lot, probably a lot more then i realized.. even though he never meowed in pain, he took it like a real boss and kept fighting until the end. i choose to bury him in my garden where he loved to go.
i took him to the vet after making a emergency apointment and putting him down was the best thing to do he said.
this was the worst decision ive ever had to make in my life, and ill probably stay depressed for a while because i was with him nearly 24/7. i still dont go outside a lot so this was my one and only companion.
ill conclude this with a picture from when he was in his prime time, still healthy and everything.

i also took a picture of him before going to the vet as a memento, but its kinda sad

i dont think i want to keep this one.. id like to remember him as a strong muscular cat that hunted atleast 1 pidgeon every week. always cheerful and purring so loud that anyone who called me could clearly hear it over the phone.
rest in peace.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, I'm sorry about your kitty. I know it sucks to make the decision to euthanize your baby, but you have to remember it was the best possible solution. If pets could talk, I'm sure he would thank you and tell you he loves you.
He looks very pretty in that picture. ^
Don't have many big words for you and your late feline overlord, but I wanted to post still.
Sorry about your cat m8.
thanks tux and ronin for cheering me up :)
sorry for yr loss of kitty :[
You're welcome! I hope you feel better.
