Instead, it’s to acknowledge that Final Fantasy XIV is currently the most played subscription MMO despite industry trends to different designs and business models. This puts its newest expansion, Shadowbringers, under incredible scrutiny. While the previous expansion, Stormblood, was by no means a bad expansion, it remains the least popular of XIV’s career. Should Shadowbringers follow its example, FFXIV’s recent success would quickly topple.
Thankfully, both for its developers and for the players hoping for an incredible expansion, Shadowbringers has defied expectations.
