Runescape Clone?
Hey guys,
No, this isn't a request for a game although it might seem like one from the title. It's just another discussion I wanted to bring up.
Basically, you see all these companies that have been framed for the 'cloning' verdict. Basically, it's usually a bunch of crap since the game has been in dev. since before the other game that it's copying was out, but sometimes it really is a clone.
I mean, the process is simple. Successful MMO = Good money maker. Successful MMO clone = Earn money quick scheme. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
In some cases, it adds features to the original game, like how Ghost added the pvp, Ghost being known as a Maplestory clone. The game leaves off a lot of other stuff from MS that make it less appealing still, but this brings me to my next point.
Runescape clones. I have yet to see an accomplished runescape clone. "Zomg rs suxs, y mak a clone of dat?" Well, let's see.
Medieval MMOs = Popular.
There's the driving fact. A lot of people like those, and are willing to try them even if they turn out to be a big huge pile of crap like Ferentus. Now, let's take a look at other aspects of runescape.
Good quests. The quests actually require you to follow a storyline unlike a lot of games, but the storyline is open-ended. You're not trying to do one specific task, because theoretically the game would come to an end with that storyline. In RS, the quests are just tasks on your journey to being more heroic then you were the day before.
Job skills. Bored of killing things? Crafting, mining, fishing, very popular requests in MMOs, and personally one of my favorite things in RS or any MMO for that matter.
I mean, take RS and do better graphics. Fix up the quests so they are a little more challenging perhaps, take away the grind a little more by good exp from the hard quests, keep the active updates and events and expansions, and make the job skills a little more fun.
That right there, would be a successful MMO. One of the most popular things in a lot of MMOs is crafting. In a lot of games you grind, get the items, and go to a guy. In RS, you have to mine for the items, improve your mining level, smith the ores, improve your smithing level and also smith the bars into new items.
I personally like that better then going to an NPC with some items you randomly found and asking him to make you something.
So why has no one made a Runescape clone that's like Runescape on steroids? Do you guys agree that it could easily be successful if they changed a couple things for the better, but kept the active events and updates?
Discuss. xP

You know, I've always wanted to see a good Runescape clone.
I like the amount of "life skills" in Runescape, IE Cutting wood, fishing, building fires. I think that an MMORPG with nice graphics and faster gameplay which implemented some of these features would be quite nice.

idk why everyone hates runescape i happen to think its a very great game i love the quest lol...they arent just go kill this monster 500 times and stuff yall cant hate on it the graphic aint nutin the battle system could need some work pvp rocks on it yall rlly just dont like it for no reason i bet all of you started off playing runescape...i did
and u can forget the cooking and wood cutting and all that stuff runescape has all the best gameplay just needs more like places to explore and more armor and make everything free instead of a memebrship..cuz ppl will donate..most mmorpgs trying to do stupid things to inovate..if i had money id buy out jagex and like tell them to have bigger servers and better graphics and a better battle sysetm and maybe mounts and more wpns and armor variety and alot more quest..SORRY FO MY TYPING IDC

Actually, my first mmo was Maple Story. xD Just saying.
I think that the ideas behind Runescape are very nice, my biggest issues with the game are the graphics and how slow the combat/movement is.
However, I realize how good of a game it is, considering it is run in Java.

RS is a great game. Like other says, R2 is prolly the best around. There is http://www.rsclegacy.com too which is the classic verson. Still fun.
-
Isn't RS2 the one that people play, like, now? Lol xD.
RS3, I think you mean.
-
most ppl hate rs basically cause of the graphics cause ... well they basically flat out suck if they made a 3d version (that doesn't look like crap like it does now) with some more stuff i'd play it for sure i loved rs (before i got banned) after that i kinda noticed the "life skills", as elazulblack called it, were basically only thing that kept me playing it anyways i hope they make a better version of it but knowing jagex they won't...
-
Hahah I played that so many years ago, so many... I remember killing chickens or something. xD
I lost interest though, don't remember why.
-
i used to play RS but then by friend gave my guy away. i told him i was quitting as a joke, he knew my PW and i forgot that he knew, the next day he gave my guy away, a lvl 84:(. i was pissed. thats when i quit.

"awplanet" really turned me off when they just jacked the Matrix screensaver and made it their login screen.
Also, those gfx r horrid. hardly better than runescape :P

I must say i love how you can choose what ever crafting skills and how many crafting skills you want in runescape. In many MMO's you only get to choose one set or a certain three, which means you can never fully experiance the game with one charactor, in runescape there is no punishment for becoming a tradesman of all the professions.

i like Runescape the way it is now, though increasing the exp from stuff and maybe add new attack animations and you would have a better game then they do now.
and for the people who say the graphics suck, lets see you do better in java.
