As you're speaking of the past, "they were religious", one can assume that you mean people in the past. In the past people in a lot of regions were harassed if they weren't following the religion of that region.
1 word... learned. It's impossible to innately disagree with an idea without having first been introduced to the idea, especially a man-made concept. When you're introduced to an idea you also hear opinions, in which you in turn assess and balance it with your already learned ideals. Much like you can't be born a Christian, you aren't born without a lack of imagination for what you otherwise can't see(unless you are mentally stunted maybe). Depending on the way you were brought up(religion, or a lack thereof, specifically), you take 1 of 3(or more) roads in life, 1, you embrace it, 2, you completely rebel against it(that's you wanting to be rebellious), 3, you just ... don't give a crap.
