From what I've read in the Bioware support forums, no one can run Mass Effect. I bought it about a week ago and I got the "failed to compile global shader" error. Just stick to WoW and leave Mass Effect alone, trust me.

You'd get crappy framerates on lowest quality
Build one yourself. Check Newegg.com out. Also think about getting a E2180 as your processor. On stock cooling it overclocks to 3.2 ghz fine. Heres a rig I'm getting

For extra 100€ of that computer price, i'm fitting in a 8800GT, a cool stylish case, a E8400 aka Wolfdale processor, and a decent motherboard+PSU to support all that.
So,think about it.Dell is a ripoff. I mean, those RAM sticks are 667MHZs,instead of 800MHZ.Those don't bottleneck your system as much and cost like 3€ more! And why do you even need 500GBs of HD?I'm fine with 200GB, heck most people do fine with 300GBs.
If you don't know how to build a computer,i'm sure you can select the hardware and make an order for the staff to put it together for you and save you the trouble of setting up all the boring software. It will take much longer, however the hardware shop my sister ordered her new PC only charged her 30€.
This is true! Stupid ass mass effect wont run on most peoples PCs because the damn game is horribly programmed for the PC. Stupid BioWare, probably didn't even test the game and rushed the release.
Either way my pirated version is staying on my computer just in case a patch comes out for this black screen bullsh!t.
The black screen only occurs with the pirated version or a legal version with a crack, I doubt you even bought the game.
It is true that it is badly optimized, with all graphics on high I get ~25fps on a 8800GT, Q6600, 2GB, goes up to 35fps if I turn off film grain.
Even owners of the legal uncracked version cannot run it. You may not believe that I own it, but the proof that the error exists is all over the Bioware forums. Pirates and Legal Consumers both have a problem with this game.
I see, sorry for getting worked up then. In any case, I believe that Bioware should of put a little more effort into testing the game. The amount of complaints on the Bioware support forum is ridiculous.
Actually the guy that you are talking about (if we are talking about the same guy) said he was getting the black screen, and then a flash of blue screen and his computer reboots and sometimes the game just stays on a black screen. He then went on to say that by applying the no-CD crack the game started working perfectly.
