Default Teachers Walk Armed in Texas

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5945430.html

HARROLD, Texas — A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported.

Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.

In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

Superintendent David Thweatt said the small community is a 30-minute drive from the sheriff's office, leaving students and teachers without protection. He said the district's lone campus sits 500 feet from heavily trafficked U.S. 287, which could make it a target.

"When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that's when all of these shootings started. Why would you put it out there that a group of people can't defend themselves? That's like saying 'sic 'em' to a dog," Thweatt said in Friday's online edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
    About time.

    All I got to say.

    Education however isn't economic.
As long as people can be on average assumed to be to stupid to deal with it how can anyone find it safe to follow their demands?

Also, saying that rather everyone should carry a gun around, than no one...
Is this suposed to be educating people that guns are not necessary?

If billy shoots 5 bullets at timmy, and timmy shoots 3 bullets at sarah, how much bloodloss will there be in twenty minutes?
Honestly, I don't see a point in banning guns when they can be used productively. And in this case they seem to be more of a deterrent than an actual self defense mechanism.

This should work in their favor, if the teachers don't abuse the fact they have guns, of course.

"Billy! You'd better do your homework or I'm coming over to your house and shooting you in the knee!" Should never happen. If it does, then that teacher needs to be sent to a mental institution :P

    Actually, this is almost correct.

It's not the fact that everyone should be armed, but that they should be allowed to protect themselves. Banning guns does not work like everyone thinks, just look at the U.K. or Austraila. Unarmed citizens are more likely to be a victim than known armed citizens, it's a fact. Not all of the following statstics are 100% up-to-date, but they give you an idea.

Fact: Armed citizens are a deterrent. Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year, or 6,849 a day...and most of the time the gun is never fired and no one is hurt, not even the criminal. Every day, 550 rapes, 1,100 murders, and 5,200 other violent crimes are prevented just by showing a gun. In less than 0.9% of these instances is the gun ever actually fired.

Fact: 60% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they knew the victim was armed. 40% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they thought the victim might be armed.

Fact: In Texas, murder rates fell 50% faster than the national average in the year after their concealed carry law passed. **** rates fell 93% faster in the first year after enactment, and 500% faster in the second. Assaults fell 250% faster in the second year.

Fact: In 1982, Kennesaw, GA passed a law requiring heads of households to keep at least one firearm in the house. The residential burglary rate dropped 89% the following year.

Fact: Two-thirds of the people who die each year from gunfire are criminals being shot by other criminals.

Fact: 11% of police shootings kill an innocent person - about 2% of shootings by citizens kill an innocent person.

    I have more.

I would have no complaints if every firearm on the face of the Earth disappeared. But they won't, and pretending that they will won't help anything. You all can live in fantasy land if you want, but I'm staying strapped (being robbed at gunpoint will make you think about your safety a lot more). It's cool, I don't hate people for not wearing their seat belts either.

This is a good way to stop some crazy ass mother ****ers from going into schools and just shooting the hell out of everybody. If they know the teachers have guns, they're going to be more hesitant, and won't do that shit. Even if they do, it's them against 20+ armed and trained people ( Teachers ), and less people will be killed. As long as they don't abuse them, which I don't think most teachers will. I think more school shootings will stop happening if all teachers are trained to use guns and have guns. "Nothing stops gun violence like using more guns"?...I really don't see the logic in that sentence. Insane people who don't want to live want to take their anger out on others. They do it in schools, why? Because no one is walking around with a ****ing gun( Now that they've started, school shootings = less often) There's a reason they don't ****ing walk into a police station with ****ing guns Phr0zen... the guys in the police station have guns, and the insane guy walking in there with a gun will be shot before he even empty's half his clip. That's why you don't see " LOCAL NEWS : Police station shooting" as often as school shootings.

March of the black lions = win.

It's unfortunate that people feel that it is better to restrict and regulate law abiding citizens rather than to empower them.

This is one of the most important things, which I think should be bolded:

In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.
Not simply a "hey, lets let the teachers have guns!" move. There is much more to do than those that would normally just get a gun.

And one more thing that I think would be best, is that the gun can't be loaded at all times. Carry the weapon and the clip, but not together.
The gun will be already holstered, so you can't react immediately to a shooting, so for a surprise shoot-out, there would be no difference in the two cases.
But it would ensure that it's a lot harder for any accidents to happen.
