The hype is being caused by mainly because of the September update, which will feature a lot of updates that will make the game easier to level up, gain items and complete quests in.
I know a large guild on WoW (around 120+ people) and all of them are quitting to play FFXI.
It's really really one of the best things to happen to FFXI.

FFXI has the following.
Ballista. Brenner. The Diorama and Pankration.
I suppose people just enjoy the game and therefore talk about it. I'm hardly going to stop people as I enjoy it too and feel the need to aid people who should happen to join from this server.

I think the reason for the hype is a large amount of people from OnRPG played FFXI at one time and really enjoyed the game. It has appeal that will always be there and a lot of us are often tempted to go back to FFXI (I have already done it once and got my char from 29-61 before quitting again) and I am tempted to play it again, but with WAR coming out, my senior year, GRE's and needing to find a job that will get me my 60-70k a year I just cannot play it yet and I really want to LOL.

You really wouldn't need another character, unless you were making mules.
You can pick and choose between any class at any time during when you enter your mog house.
Kataal you may want to hold off until updating until about the 3rd or 4th of September as your buddy pass will only last until the end of the month, which if you do it tomorrow will be a day rather than a month.

you get to do personal dungeons and FINALLY can have players scale levels down to grouped members.
so basically 2 features that are in almost every AAA mmo now a days are FINALLY being included in this game.
now if they will actually give you something new to do instead of just grinding tons of monsters for exp.
