You WILL get better if you play an FPS long enough, however, as you stated yourself, you seem "hopelessly bad at them".
Some people aren't "hopelessly bad", even if they may have less experience than you do.
MMORPG's are almost always dictated soley by time, while FPS's have that AND other elements.

A lot of games take different skills to get good at them. I suck shit at macroing and therefore suck shit at MMO and RTS games. I still play them, but suck giant shits. I'd like to think I'm better at FPS games then RTS and MMO, as they don't require (usually) any macroing and rely on reaction time and precision.
So, I think we can all agree that the only games that suck are casual games.
