    Default Mental illness and medication

How do you feel about medicating people with Bi-Polar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, etc.,?

Do you think they really need it? Do you believe in mental illnesses?

I personally have been diagnosed with all three of the above mentioned with an addition to Major Depression Disorder. I've been put on Zoloft, Prozac, Lexapro, Cymbalta, Wellbutrin and Trazadone. I was on Zoloft from when I was in sixth grade all the way into my junior year. Then from my junior year until the end of my senior year I was on all the other medications. Now that I'm graduated, I don't take anything. I don't really feel the need to, and it seems like I'm doing okay without them. I just think I had a bad week in middle school with my anger, and was wrongly diagnosed with ADHD.

Since I don't really know anyone else with any "mental illnesses", I was wondering if anyone else was in the same boat as I was/am? I would love to hear anyone's input

I think they need help, I suppose.

I think you need to exhaust every available method without drugs, first.

Well I think they need help. Theirs an african chick in my class who flips out if you tell her she's looking good. Apparently she thinks your making fun of her.

I think I have ADD or ADHD I don't really know the difference. But I take medicine for one of those O.o. I'm not hyper at all so I'm guessing ADD.

I used to be on some depression crap.

But then I found out I wasn't depressed, I was just being a dumbass, and the pills were just perpetuating the stupidity, ya know? I wasn't depressed, I was just lonely.

I hated taking those pills every day of my life.

I have a real close friend with ADHD. He takes some Concerta (kinda like riddalin) for it, and is always ****ing miserable when he takes it. It just ****s him up even worse than he was to begin with, and makes him unable to function. He used to bring me his pills lol.

SO, I'm sure there are people out there who can benefit from the various prescription drugs, but 3/4ths of the time, doctors are all too happy to prescribe something WAY too quickly, without proper analysis. They just hand out miracle pills to everyone without even trying, and thats just sad.

Not me personally but my friend has insomnia and he takes pills and when he runs out or they aren't working he gets angry really fast..

So uh guess it's working for him? But then again he kinda got reliant on them.

Damn douche always calls me up when I'm sleeping.

I forgot about insomnia. I can see why he'd get angry really fast though. I love to sleep, and if I miss out on sleeping for the night, I get really pissy.

Reminds me of the ******ed pills in "America Dad",

Anyhow, You can use pills to fool people minds and let them think they get better.
Evil yes, harmless yes, affective depends.
Also these days everyone thinks hes mental ill, also the parents for their child.

Still there are people that truely have it and prehaps can use the medicine.

Since I've just graduated high school, I've had to deal with 439683059654608 of angsty teens self diagnosing themselves. It's seriously become a ****ing trend. You aren't cool if you aren't sad - and the only way to authenticate your sadness as not being emo is to claim that you are bipolar, or manic depressive, or a plethora of other diseases.

Because of this, I've just stopped believing people. I know mental disorders exist; schizophrenia and panic disorders run deeply through my family tree, but I also feel that we as humans are too quick to diagnose our emotions as disorders.

I have a lot of friends on antidepressants and medication, and while for some it helps them combat their sad feelings - it also stops them from feeling overly happy. Remember the zoloft commercial? The medicine balances your hormone receptors, so that you feel balanced - meaning no extreme happiness or sadness. This is like removing your humanity.

So, I would reccommend you try to get off your meds (as hardcore as you sound by taking them) and start enjoying life again. EVERYONE LOVES YOU.

    /end rant

    Listen to what Kitty says.

Stop relying on mood altering substances, clinging to them, throwing money away on them and appreciate the life you have with a clear mind.

Says the guy, who wants smoking cannabis legalized...

    Why do you care?
If you don't like it, don't use it.
Why don't you just not use anti-depressants? Let others do what they want.

Anyway... Those pills may keep you from sobbing in the corner, but I've always liked the way William Faulkner said: “Given the choice between the experience of pain and nothing, I would choose pain” Having your emotions dulled by medication is like playing a bad video game - you're not gonna tear out your hair out of boredom, but you're not gonna be satisfied by the ugly colorless boxes flicking back and forth on the screen.

    LOL this should be quoted.

If you had a mental illness, you'd either KNOW it or you'd be so oblivious to the fact that you had it (first person p-o-v) that you wouldn't waste your damn time diagnosing yourself. Generally, crazy people don't think they are crazy because it's all too real to them.

    1) My post had deeper meaning than you or anyone else will probably see.

    2) Exactly. Where did I say he can't do what he wants? I offered my personal opinion. Getting hooked on anti-depressants is bad news in MY opinion. The idiocy of which you are guilty is, again, assuming cannabis is anywhere close to being as addictive as...any other drug.

Anti-depressants are a physically addictive, as well as mentally addictive, substance. That, coupled with depression itself, can be a bad mix. However, if that's what he wants, he can knock himself out.

Don't talk about drugs, you know nothing of the subject and you fail every time you type.

    Nice try though.

1)Not all addictive mood altering things are bad (example: caffeine)
2)Not all non addictive mood altering things are good (example: LSD, ecstasy)
3)You said that people should stop using mood altering substances and to appreciate life with a clear mind, yet you propagate the use of marijuana, which is a psychoactive drug.
4)The whole point of using anti-depressants is to get rid of the depression part, yet you say they are not a good combination.
5)I did not claim that marijuana was addictive in my last post, stop making stuff up.

Now, why don't you go play with your drugs and stop saying stupid stuff, you're only making a fool out of yourself, you self-contradicting, inconsistent ******...
Woah. Let's keep the language to a minimum.

So I just got back from a counselor I used to see back when I was in middle school. She asked me about my history of "mental illnesses" and drug use, so I told her. Then she had me take an alcohol assessment test, I guess to see if it seemed like I was abusing alcohol. One of the questions on the form was : True or False - It does not bother me when I see animals being harmed.

    W T F

What does that have to do with anything drug or alcohol related?

Anywho, I have a followup appointment in a few weeks, and that's where I get to find out what she thinks is "wrong" with me.

See, the thing is that advocating and using marijuana is quite a different scenario. Using marijuana is at first decided on with a clear head. Also, the effects only last a few hours, at which point you are back to normal. You can schedule your 'high' in a way that does not impact you negatively.

Drugs for ADD and such last all day, and are supposed to. Which, makes you dependent on that drug, as eventually you will only feel normal with the drug.

Also, those drugs don't cure the problem, they only mask it (much like over the counter cough syrup does). So basically they alter you, change you, but never actually fix it. And in many cases, incorrect or over prescribing (wrong doses) and such can leave you in a worse state, or if done really bad have permanent effects on you.

The main problem as I see it, is that everyone wants the easy way out. Kid acts up (which is normal) so instead of teaching your child to behave, you stuff pills down his throat. Mis-diagnosis is absolutely terrible, and using any sort of prescription should only be done when absolutely necessary.

These drugs help many people and that's a fact. But, so many people take these drugs when they didn't need them in the first place.

My friend has ADHD, and when I see him at school he's really quiet, and talks very slowly.

When he forgets to take his medicine, though, he's jumping around, talking fast, and does not get irritated as easily.

This is quite possible although for younger kids. I'm eighteen though, so I doubt it was intended towards my age group. It was also supposedly an assessment to see if I had an alcohol problem. Alcohol + harming animals = wait what?
