I don't define hardcore and casual by time spent playing games, cause most people define hardcore and casual as an mmorpg type setting. It should be based on the behavior a person shows in-game.

wtf, "hardcore gamer" only makes me think of internet tough guys, but those usually make me lul, thus really failing at being "hardcore".

Ever heard of a "hardcore tv-watcher"? No. Hardcore per definition claims that there is some kind of skill/talent within those that take games way too seriously.
Only thing I can think of that is appropriate, is that "hardcore" gamers don't learn any longer (aka knowing everything worthwhile about the game) as opposed to causal gamers (DS target audience, aka your grandmother).

Real Hardcore gamers (wich I met in ryl, 2moons and wow):

    - They always work in a group
    - The group is ready 24/7
    - Do account sharing or meet IRL to play in one room for easy communication and same exact online times or the ability to instantly replace someone that has to do something IRL
    - WOW: Doing Raiding 7 Days a week 8 Hours+ per day mostly around evening with 25+ people. If you cant be there once you get warned a few times, after that you get kicked from the guild because you can be easily replaced since there will be alot of people trying to join your Guild (Guilds like these are server top and do firstkills, thats why)
    - 2Moons: Way more time consuming than WOW, I met people that stay on for 18-20 hours a day for several weeks, sometimes they skip sleep for 3-4 days using drugs (forgot the name but it was something like a very strong coffeine). They work as a full party of 7-8 people, this means theres a full party of 6 people 24/7 while the others are sleeping, and when these wake up, two other guys go to bed etc. All in all it is way more time consuming than WOW to be the best.
    - RYL2: The game is based on Equipment wich can be enchanted with materials that you can buy in the cash shop. Theres pretty much no limit on enchanting, so the more you buy, the better you are.
The server top guys spent atleast 5k$ to get some Equipment parts to the maximum, but ive even heard about xx.000$ sums spent. I personaly spent something around 200$ and I already started owning alot of people, so you can imagine that you are a god with the sums spent that I stated above:

People with normal equip hit this boss for 50-150 dmg, check out his crits. Yeah, he can solo world bosses wich means alot of riches for him ^^

;/ So many of the previous posters in this thread have somewhat biased, if not general misconceptions of the casual gamer as opposed to the hardcore gamer. ;o A hardcore gamer would be someone who strives to achieve all the goals the game offers to complete, usually at a higher difficulty and plays these games much more often than casual gamers. I'm h to the core in online competitive titles especially, but unlike many classified as "hardcore gamers" (you know the type, childish and insults you if they win or lose, depending on which they either gloat or complain.) I don't insult or belittle people because I have good sportsmanship.

    __________________________________________________ __________________________________

The casual gamer does not play often, maybe an hour or two in a puzzle game or first person shooter. They do not like to increase the difficulty because they would rather breeze through the game with as little frustration as possible. There are many more of these types of gamers than there are hardcore because their main focus is relieving stress and/or having fun. ;o I mean Nintendo's emphasized all focus towards the casual gamer and look how well they're doing. ;D I hope I've cleared up some confusion for you guys.

Sorry, just got to do that. That is incorrect and as rude as me cursing at you.
    We hardcore gamer aren't extremist.

Hardcore gamer is when you know your situation in game and most of the time you only think of winning.

    I won't deny I'm a hardcore gamer.

"Hardcore" Players DO play 15+ hours a day, they DO badmouth everyone who isn't a max level or close 5 hours after a game goes live, and they DO make excuses like "oh getting to level over 9000 is easy lol it took me 30minutes" and "lol I had 99999999999999999999 gold at lvl 5 noob ur doing it rong"

Actual Hardcore gamers? They're too busy playing games to even bother posting on a gaming forum :P
I think you're getting "Hardcore Gamers" mixed up with "Assholes"

In my opinion, casual gamers play no more than 5 hours of a game per week. Someone in the thread had pointed out in their opinion that a casual gamer is anything between 1-5 hrs a day. Five hours in one day is a HUGE portion of your day, which kills the casual aspect of it.

Its basically an excuse to make games worth nobodies time and calling them "casual gamers game" for the sake of having them around. I don't really see being a casual gamer as giving you a time frame to the amount of games you play. Nor do I see that if you wear your asshole on your sleeve, does it make you a hardcore gamer.

A casual gamer if anything, is a stereotype given in the game industry for the audience that will play your crappy games if nobody else does. Whereas Hardcore seems to fit the role of anyone who plays this game with blood, and or an actual storyline. More or less, these words define not who anyone really is as a gamer. I've played with guys on TF2 who literally have 300+ hours game time, like 30-40 hours a week but they aren't assholes.

Casual gamer = Plays crappy games and enjoys them
Hardcore gamer = Plays good games and enjoys them

But if it were a measure of character, this thread could really just be called "Assholes or Mario Party players, which do you prefer?"
I'd have to say you sumed up the issues regarding the terms 'casual' and 'hardcore' fairly well.

i dont think it's about the time put into the game i think it's about how that time is displaced, like myself im like a jack of all trades but a master of none, i play 6+ hours a day 6+days a week BUT i dont spend it all on one game (if i did i would be a god at it) but no, i play whatever i feel, i follow zephyr, the wind of games

EDIT: i made that last part up, we really should make a wind to follow in games

I think it depends on age and duties. If you are middle aged and play games thats fine because it is probably stress and there is probabaly nothing better to do.
If you go to school and play 13+ hours of video games a day thats still fine.

I think the line is when you become unpopular with the girls or when you don't know how to start a conversation with statements other than "HEY HAVE YOU TRIED (INSERT NAME OF GAME) I HEARD ITS AWESOME!"
