Default How MMORPG's hurt people's lives...

I would like to know what people think of this.. because it's not addressed to much.

I've been a WoW player and FFXI player and have played many rpgs people play these games but never really notice how harmful they can be until it's to late. I noticed how bad these games are for your health, social life, sleep and more. i believe these games are in the category of Drugs because it does the exact same thing just in a different way. it might not make you feel the way drugs make you feel but it still addicts you to the eviorment and makes you so addicted you become zombies in front of a computer or television screen for not just days but weeks and months not doing anything but playing this game trying to accomplish goals or maybe even dreams of the armor and money you want in the game. some people quit there jobs over it, some kids quit school over it.. you lose countless sleep over them trying to obtain these goals. but in reality what does it accomplish? yup that's right nothing everyone starts living in a false reality which gives them nothing in return.. your just wasting your money and time like any other drug.

    what do you think?

I think your naive when you consider gaming to be with drugs. Drugs are addictive to the mind and the body is forced to take them more because they are dependent on those.

gaming on the other hand are hobbies for people that hate their own social life. Anyone who has a nice life would voluntarily stop playing to go hang with friends. But for people that don't get invited to chill play games instead.

I play WoW all of the time, but I still go to work, and if my girlfriend feels like doing something, I'll drop my WoW gaming and go do that. It's just kind of a time killer for me, something to do when nothing else is going on.

Even though, I admit, some people have problems. One friend of mine was a no-lifer on WoW. But, he got drafted, so when he comes back from that he might be different. He's probably going through WoW withdrawls as we speak.

I have seen people withdraw from their other friends and only go to LAN parties with their WoW friends...seriously withdraw. I mean, won't go do anything, they just wanna go play WoW.

I have 2 or 3 buddies that didn't graduate because they skipped school every day to go play WoW.

Hell, even I graduated on time...so,yeah...it CAN BE a big problem IMHO.

Now, I play Maple Story more than I should prolly, but I don't cancel plans of hanging out with my friends to sit home alone and play that shit.

That's my opinion too, if u have a good social life, u would stop by yourself and go out with friend sometimes. If u don't, then it's still not a drug, It's just more dangerous for you to fall in addiction

Those are just the repercussions of an addiction. It could be for anything almost. Talk about closed minded, just control yourself more and don't stay on the computer 24/7 and go out once in a while.

Same thing for me, just a time killer when nothing else is going on. Whenever friends or Girlfriend wanna do something, i log off instantly

    i dont get it....

The only thing people say about gaming is that its anti social? The other stuff cant be down to gaming its more like being an idiot.

mmorpgs people are socialising with many other people alotof the time so i dunno what thats on about....

But with me i go out most of the week but i cant be out 24/7 can i...and games is a great way to waste time.

Have you ever been in the opening of a game and you see "idiots" try to rush to the highest level possible instead of experiencing the game properly....They are the people that make these issues arise. Even if people love games like WoW theres really no reason to skip alot of classes over Any game.

But i wont lie lol i have skipped a few of my classes for game releases contemplating on whether i can skip fable 2 release since that game is just gonna be too amazing.

Last year(and the year before), I was just like your friends.
This year, however, I changed some things. I'm not playing that much anymore. Still too much infront of the PC, though.

I personally don't have any issues with my social life, as many others, but I'm just bored of RL. People here suck...big time. I feel like I'm surrounded by hillbillies.

well yea there's a huge difference in socializing with people on a game that live 1000 miles away rather than socializing with people that live in your area and actually "do things with" lol

It doesn't "hurt people's lives" if you draw a line. Don't get both those lives mixed up, and most importantly...know your priorities.
    Game stays, friends don't. /sarcasm

exactly , but you would be amazed how many people are actually hardcore about MMORPG's, like super hardcore to the point of playing nonstop for weeks .lol

i guess but most gamers nowadays do both so the topic title doesnt make sense. If i made a poll in the general section or w.e i bet most would say they have a lifestyle outside of their computer/gaming world.

Its just the odd few its probably because alot of teens nowadays think that getting drunk/high is fun but meh.

    +rep for Ayabi

That's pretty sad, i'm sure those people think of it as an emulation of real life, another way to make friends you'll probably never meet and girlfriends that you'll never kiss. What's even worse is that they can hardly be brought back to reality, because they're probably thinking of it as a way of life. IMHO, it's just a big dream. When they'll wake up and see the emptiness they've created, they're gonna feel like crap and will have to start over.

MMORPGs are a pure waste of your time, that's what I realized after way too much time spent gaming. It was fun I admit but imagine what could you do/learn in the time you literally wasted doing the same thing over and over ie. learn to play an instrument, polish your drawing skills and basically any other creative thing. gaming...is not creative at all and you wont get any benefits from it. Sure it's okay for a hobby....let's say an 2-3 hours a day or a few days a month if you really wanna play non-stop but anything more than that is just an addiction and if you have nothing else to do except gaming...well I'd suggest you start doing something. Don't WASTE too much time on something so trivial because in the end you're gonna regret it.

i play 2-3 hours daily really o.O once my friends are all not busy and set up a schedule to meet up, im off the computer right away to chill out my friends. there are many occassion where they call me in the middle of a dungoen run or a raid, i will still log off, lol. playing games is fun and all, but i rather enjoy doing more active things with my friends rather than sitting on my fat ass on teh pc every day.

*wishes he that he has a pool table in his room*

i dont' think its mostly just about priority, but also on what they enjoy too. in high school and my first few semester of college, i only went to less than 20% of my class, and that was only for tests and exams. the courses are boring, now im in my professional semester long wiht other semester, but atleast now i have courses i enjoy going to.

the reason i think most people quit high school to play game is due to the fact that high school courses were boring as hell (once i finish passing all the courses that interested me) ^^; i will honestly say this, it is really hard to put effort into something that you do not enjoy, as in you really really do not enjoy it.

yea, i was held back in high school for not passing academic english >_> beside that, i pass all the ocurses i like with flying colours, and having to take w/e course to fill my time table. was a huge drag but i still manage to pass.

I wouldnt say that.. Gaming is a fairly new form of enterrainment its expanding moar and moar. Heck. I know people who found their love on the internet and met them. Seriously people just need to accept new things. give them time.

Seriously and how can you people ever blame people who are having fun. As long if you have fun its not a frakkin waste of time.

    Not completely true.
There are drugs that are not physically addicting. Marijuana is one of them.
As for mental addiction, anything can be mentally addicting. What is and isn't depends on the person.
So yes, games can be addicting. Not for everyone, no. But it can be.

When you live out in the middle of nowhere, with no real way to see or hang out with people because they're already in their little groups, MMOs are a way to keep you from going insane from just school all the time.

Theres my opinion, and it's pretty extreme, I think.
