    Default Quanity , Quality

Esentialy , this is meant to be one big ass debate about why you think a a majority of the games are cartoony ( I personaly enjoy the look depending on how they pull it off , I enjoyed ROSE's art work personaly) and few are realistic , witch graphics look BETTER , what type of game tends to have the most amount of content in it , is this a representation of the graphical design , or just the companys creativity.

Its alot of questions , and as ONRPG I know this will go off topic , however I'd like to see some form of a conversation start.

Personaly , I like the look of a cartoony game , however the gaming is never as intense as the realistic models are , Im unsure why however I find it odd.

For me, graphics are nice, but I like the cartoony look because it flows better, for example, maplestory's gameplay and controls were very fluid and enjoyable. Of course, I value gameplay the most, Not "grind" or graphics. If a game is fun, it shouldn't matter about how much time you have to spend on it to get another level.

I don't think graphics should matter. Sure, it's wonderful to have a nice, pretty game (cartoony or realistic), but I think that gameplay and content is what should matter.

But if I had to select one, I would select a realistic style of graphics. For example, AoC, while lacking in content, is the prettiest MMORPG I have ever played.

Ya , basicly , I find most simple , grindy non UBER 1337 GFX games to be fun , maples grind felt like nothing because I enjoyed grinding, of course my attitude has changed over the months but STILL !

i agree on the gameplay > graphics, because if a 2D sidescroller had great gameplay, it wouldnt really matter if it were cartoony or realistic graphics

Graphics arent really needed, but in some situations they are.

Like, I'd rather play a game with 2D graphics, then a really bulky, sketchy 3D player-made game.
Or I'd rather play a 2 year old game then a 20 year old game. All really depends.

    Get my point?

And, I prefer Gameplay over GFX.

    Gameplay>Graphics.

That being said, graphics add the feel to the game. For E.G, TF2, Its a FPS which should have a serious feel to it but the graphics add on with some of the scripting words and add on to the humor. Even the blood sprouting out and Body parts flying everywhere looks funny. Now if the graphics were more like rohan or requiem, It would be scary rather than funny.

Hahaha, It's ok. I was just saying that some classics are still awesome ^_^

I used to have the old game-gear. I bet no one remembers that, but it was sega's answer to the gameboy. It was awesome

And Quake, was it really? I dunno, I must be too tired to pick up on this stuff xD

thats like the most important thing what graphics do, they add a feel to the game, for example you want to make a horror kind-ish game like Requiem, then you wouldn't go for the cartoony style, unless you want to scare 4 year olds ^^

cartoony o.o lol ofcourse realistic, but i dont think graphics are the main problem right now, the main issue are the generic games coming out every week, claiming that they are ''unique'' in some sort of way

Well , they atempt to add one feature that if it was perfect the game would be amazing , however they all failed

The only game I reay think that followed through with its biggest feature was perfect world with its customization.

I just don't think MMOs should try to look too realist at all. Trying to look real brings out flaws a lot easier than a game with more cartoon-like graphics. The top-notch high quality graphics should stick to single-player games, imo. Not to say that MMOs should stick to ugly, dull graphics, but shooting for super realistic is a bit far fetched.

i think a game should look decent, but i would like a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge world, like ****ing monstrous playing field and a lot of extras and fun things too do. like SecondLife without the suck.

A realistic MMO will be ridiculous. Who wants to die in 2 hits? Who wants to fight a bear and instead of the usual cutting it up with your uber lazer sword, you get pawed and smashed up instead? Who wants to get sneak attacked by a venomous snake while killing the last boss in a raid?

I agree. The games I have stuck with are usually animeish. Realistic looking games get so old for me and so quickly too. The best by far has been GW:Factions. And I hate Factions.

What about a giant 30ft bear that randomly spawns in front of a town entrance with a mafia of smaller but still huge bears that will tear you to peices if you don't know how to solo the thing? Also, what if the bear drops a ridiculously expensive blacksmithing shield manual that can make up to 5 kickass shields worth around 2~10mil each depending on what color combinations you get on the shields? And what if it's AI is far far smarter than you and has passive defensive capabilities that randomly activate and negate your attacks?

Now what if you were naked while you were fighting this thing?

(Edit: Sorry for the long post xD)
    Y'know,

Alot of the time I feel when a graphical debate appears it sounds like many have no clue what thier talking about. I generally think it comes down to interpretation and how they set their points out. Suprisingly, from my perspective, I started with the "Gameplay > graphics" bandwagon (I still need to wishing to be a game dev) but would it suprise you if I said that graphics do matter?

Example: You're walking down a street and you see two people. One of them looks good and their attire helps it look even more pleasant. The other looks like a tramp. Who would you like to see more of? Well, that's attraction for you. Games still need to have that feature even in the visuals.

But I think there's an even more importan part... The art style.

I remember vividly when I saw the first screen of Zelda: WW. I was horrified. When anyone mentioned it I voiced my disgust. Then I had a think about it and tried to see it in motion. Right from when I saw a vid I restored my faith in it. Then I got the game, played it and found myself periodically puting my controller down and just watched it flow. I honestly think it's one of the most beutiful games I've seen. From then on I saw how visuals are important.

There's more. If properly executed, like Zelda:WW and Loco Roco as examples, it molds the gameplay and escalites its presence even more. There might have been a few people who didn't take FNR3 too well because the realistic style was merged with an arcade-like mechanic. By God it's probably the best sports game out. It feels natural and falls into place.

Example: Gears of War and Zelda:WW (Cause I feel like whoreing it). Let us swich the graphical integrity of the two and you'll see the Gameplay mechanic doesn't suit it much. You could make the games work if you tweaked the motion with the graphic style it poses. Though that would make it a completely new game in itself. You could even try and do this with a 2D and a 3D game.

Everygame has the capacity to pull it off. When you look at some of the games churn out you really don't see the effort(Lack of a better word). Maybe, just in that area, gamers could demand a little more polish.

Kiddy will always be misinterpreted because people just don't like the style. If you don't then don't say thr graphics are rubbish. Just say you don't like the visual style. Should help you not get flamed and a topic go off into one.

Well, this ended up a little too long for my liking. Any gripes please quote. I hate leaving an empty void in my opinion.

if you ask me, there simply are so many cute korean anime grinders, simply because of lack of inspiration to do something else.
A typical symptom indicating fear of change imo.

In either case, should they decide to make full realistic, artistically innovative game, they simple screw up by making it a braindead hyperintensive grind. Taken Pristontale 2 as an example, as a beta tester i can assure that there is simply nothing special about it. (crafting is a grind, leveling is a grind, money farming is an Epic grind with capital E and so on)

Everything always has to be a grind in korea, despite the graphics or gameplay. You are always looking at the same concept. Name me one korean grinder that hasn't turned into a supergrind starting somewhere mid 20's.
The product model is always the same, take 1 company and compare all their games and notice the template that keeps being reused, and that, in inter-developpers relations.

All in all, when it comes from korea, it doesn't matter wether it has good graphics or not, the gameplay is ALWAYS the same no matter how diffirent they present it (taken the supposed "gameplay trailer" from Combat Arms as an example).

With Western games (not necessarely MMORPG's), i do consider graphics over gameplay or visa versa is a possible argument of either getting or not getting the game.
Personally, i'm a graphics *****, but to a certain extent. I can bare with reasonably bad gameplay, but if it's gothic III_at_launch gameplay, then i'd have to pass.
