What looks better?Top Nav or Left Nav?

Well I'm going to make a website and I can't decide on a left hand navigation bar, or a navigation bar at the top. What looks better/is the easiest for the user?

I always preferred top navs, simply because I can just hit the Home key and I've saved myself the trouble of scrolling for the particular link that I wanted.

For aesthetic reasons though, I would say go with the left. They just look better.
