    Default photoshop lags..

okay.. so i just "bought" photosho cs4.. had the same problem with cs3, my friend did not..
when i move pictures and such it kinda glitches.. if the picture is 1000x1000 it loads 300x300 of the picture every 0.05.. well its slow.. its like the computer has a bad graphics card and you're moving a mapp really fast on the desk.. but it cant be my system that causing this?

    sapphire radeon hd4870 1GB GDDR5
    750GBHDD
    P5N-D
    3.33GHz intel duo 2 core

ive tried to look up why this is.. and i have no effing idea x.x.. please.. pimp my photoshop :o

How much RAM does your system have?

as a daily photoshop user i can tell you that photoshop sux up aloooot of ram.
you need atleast like 2GB to run CS4 properly, and heck, it still laggs from time to time, depending on the document size.(on a friends comp)
anyway, i'm still using Cs3, it uses less ram and the new features of cs4 arent that appealing to be honest ^^

Nvidia certifies drivers to work with photoshop.
That might be a hint that most drivers, even the regular ones don't run completely wild when used with it.

ATI claims to accelerate photoshop, but they don't certify drivers and don't work together with adobe closely.
They are most likely just picking up features that were designed to run on nvidia cards.

    Just an idea.

well, it can have many many reasons. check those:

too much brushes a the same time?
    too much fonts installed?
    too much layers?
does the problem appear on any file size/type?
does it only lag when you open the file or always?

You can try experiment around with going through the hassle of installing a couple of different driver versions and make sure you install and delete them properly.

i googled your problem, your not the only one with that issue. so far, no1 had a fix >_>

    try the following:

    edit -> preferences -> performance

    • make sure "enable 3D acceleration" is checked (if it's already checked, try to disable it
    • give PS more ram
    • give PS more history states and cache levels

Or some configurations use up one stick then when it's full it will spill over to the next stick. My guess is that you have poor data management between sticks. Only having one stick might help a bit. It doesn't hurt to try it.
but someone said it that photoshop was made for Nvidia cards and i have ATI?
And, if i get a 64bit xp, will i be able to have that 128GB ram? or what it was :P
    because i "bought" a xp.. and i think i got 32bit instead..

Not quite, nvidia has optimized their cards to run with Photoshop, and nvidia has specific cards for photoshopping. ATI doesn't explicitly state that although they should be able to run photoshop without any problems. Also since you're running windows vista then there might also be compatibility issues with xp and photoshop which could be from non-optimal core management or non-optimal ram management. The ram thing is easier to check since all you have to do is remove a stick and run photoshop and see if you have an improvement.

    Pro tip:

    Take one ram out.

    If it works, Profit.
If it doesn't, you saved the money of a pointless purchase, duh.

It's not like you can get XP or Vista in the 64x version and than put the RAM back in, you know.
