Default To PK or not to PK? That is the question

PKing is one of the most common features of MMORPGs. Fighting with other players face to face offers much more fun than slashing those AI mobs in the single player games. Defeating other players is the most obvious way to show off your power in a MMO. During the immersive battle, elaborate control techniques will be discovered, and players will be motivated to level up. As a result, the gameplay will be promoted. Moreover, PKing can force players to form a community, to have friends to protect each other, to remember enemies for revenge, or just to make you stay cautious on your journey. However, PKing is also a double-edge sword for MMORPGs, which might destroy an otherwise terrific game.

Imagine you were a newbie again, and trying to fit in the game. However, some battle hardened veteran suddenly comes up and PKs you without any reason. As a newbie, you don’t know how to handle it and feel upset. If it happens over and over again, you will probably think that this game isn’t fun, and you’ll just delete the client and quit the game forever.

Some might suggest the MMO world should adapt to jungle rules, new players get owned until they can grow up. But please remember, an MMO is a community for players. No community can exist in a lawless state. If someone with higher level and superior equipment can run on a killing spree without restrictions, the online community will eventually be destroyed. Consequently players will leave and then the game is doomed.

Therefore, game developers should design a fair PK system in MMOs to prevent the problems mentioned above, for players and also for themselves. Like Blizzard, they provide different types of servers for players. You can choose to join a PVP or PVE server according to your attitude on PKing. Conquer Online, as a PVP oriented MMORPG, provides its players with a well-designed PK system, which can ensure that most of players, either newbie or veteran, can enjoy the fun of the game. In Conquer, killing other players will make you accumulate PK points and the color of their character name will vary so as to warn others. If someone is killed with high PK points, he/she will be sent to jail and some equipment may be detained. The detained equipment can be redeemed and the payment will be awarded to the player who captured the killer. This bounty hunter system can protect new players from repeated random PKs, while keeping the gameplay as immersive as possible.

PKing is fun, but if it runs out of control, the game will be damaged. You must temper your bloodlust, or else there will be no one left to kill.

i do not agree, i find pvp/pk the most important feature in a mmorpg together with economy, and games with an open world and no safe places and losing something when you die/get pked is an absolute + for me, i hate ***** games where you can choose to put pk on etc, i like being pkd as a noob aswell, it gives this kind of scared feeling when your hunting, need to watch out and be carefull, its so much better imo.

PvP is common but PK systems are not games that give HUGE penalties for pkers is a broken pk system.

All in all this is the best feature any mmorpg has and is the reason im looking forward to Aion and other games. Being a fan of lineage 2 which i think was the first place i was introduced to a good pk system.

Think about it in terms of playing online. You have killed alot of bosses etc got alot of nice gear but now you dont have anything else to do. Especially on games where each build is unique piting your skills up against others is just amazing.

Now Pking and Pvp are different things i guess but Pking for alot of people i know gives them stuff to work up to.

Example - you get pked randomly while leveling so your now motivated to level up and gear up so you can get your revenge. Like you said it can get out of hand but thats whats most fun !. Small guild party is going around zerging other teams so a different guild comes to go kill them. Then they call more people then you call more people and BAM its a huge pk/pvp war without it having to be an Event (GvG, Castle Siege etc)

Yep, open pvp is the way to go. Then again, imagine you are 1 young innocent girl 1st time playing this mmo (yes i know there are no girls on the internet but still...), you see this fully geared handsome hunk running towards you..
*glimmering eyes, shining armor* -gallops towards you on a white horse-
    "ohhhh so lovely~~"
*guy whips out a glowing scythe and slices your body into half*
    "nUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu~~~" -cries-
-Young innocent girl traumatized for life and swear never to step into the mmo world again-

i cant repeat how much i loved RF onlines pvp. open pvp everywhere, pk...it was like heaven.
i'm so glad it opens again :]
i dont care getting pk'd at all, if its part of the game. people who quit because they get ganked shall rot in hell :P
pvp (including duel, pk and other modes) is the major reason for me to decide if i play a game or not. so yes, i support Pking

Not my thing, honestly. But if someone PKes me, I usually go kill him/her to get a little satisfaction. :3

ooooh griefing is frowned upon in most mmorpgs. I do the same thing, but I play like a no life to get to a higher level and then just pk the person who killed me until he/she (in very unusual cases) cries and quits =P.

The only thing fun is luring a whole mess of monsters to a dude who is afk. Let the mobs kill him and resurrect him. Rinse and repeat until he has 0 exp or negative exp.

I consider this a type of PKing because its partly player kill.

What it does prove is that the PKer is a complete asshole. They feel the need to PK so they can somehow feel better about themselves.

I like to pk, slicing up other players for the honor and glory of reaching up higher in the ladder is satisfying, too bad you gotta be like lvl 90001 to stand a chance against anyone on mmo's, i like games where its based on skill.
Why can't I find a good mmo with that system that will run on my comp (look at signature)

Its not player-kill. Your just killing a bot, which is by far more sastifiyng in some cases.

That is an assumption on your part. I often will AFK in games. I never have nor will I ever bot as it takes all the fun out of the game. There's no challange nor feeling of acomplishment in botting.

scatdose is the perfect example of the newbie PKer. The person who says "screw that if the game doesn't have PK it's ***** and noob and carebear" is the same person who attacks lower levels, and runs like a little wuss when someone their own level comes.
agreed with you, I love pvp, I love a challenge, there's no challenge killing a lvl 1 that presents no challenge or threat whatsoever, I can't see the reason why people boast about lowbie killing as something to be proud of and raise their non-existant e-peenis in an non-existant world, pretty sad and pathetic excuse imho
