You have to get yourself a sleep schedule and stick to it. Also if need be, take a 30 minute nap during lunch or something to give your body a boost of energy to last the rest of the day. I say 30 minutes, because anything more then that and you can start to fall into a deeper sleep and when you wake up will feel even more tired. Counter-productive.
Get a semi-decent breakfast in the morning, drink a glass of water when you wake up. Before I leave for work, I stop at the gas station and pick up a couple donuts and a coffee that I can't drink until I get to work (lava hot.)
I "try" to get to sleep around 12:30-1am on the weekdays. I wake up around 7am, and leave for work at 8am. I generally feel pretty good while I'm at work and don't have any problems staying awake. And all I do all day is sit in front of a PC and fix the computers people break.
But that is what I have had to get adjusted to, and for the most part it works. I'm still trying to get my "internal clock" correct.
There are a lot of articles online about methods of sleeping and how to improve your body performance throughout the day, a lot of interesting reads on how your body and mind work, I suggest looking up what you can on it.
As for falling asleep, don't eat anything before you go to sleep, try to minimize as much sound as you can, try to get your room as dark as you can, and make sure that the temperature is warm, not too hot and not too cold. All those will really help with falling asleep and having a sound comfortable sleep as well.
These are just things that worked for me through the past few months, hopefully they could help you a little as well, or at least give you some ideas.
