Three people died when a plane crashed behind a house in the 1200 block of West 17th Street at 11 p.m. Saturday, according to the Marshfield Police Department. The victims names have not been released.

Release of the names is pending until positive identification of the bodies can be made, said Sgt. Randy Punke of the police department.

"At this point we are not absolutely positive," Punke said regarding the bodies.

A flight plan was not filed and the intensity of the fire and crash rendered the identifying numbers on the plane's tail unreadable, said Mike Meyers, former mayor and spokesperson for the city airport.

"At this point, every indication is that it (the plane) was landing," Meyers said. "We're not absolutely sure where it was coming from."The plane struck the residence and caused a fire and secondary explosions, according to the report. None of the residents was injured. The fire was extinguished by Marshfield Fire and Rescue.

The back wall of the house was burning and quickly extinguished, said Scott Owen, fire department deputy chief. The fire burning the plane was rapidly extinguished too. A crew of nine firefighters, two fire engines, ladder truck and ambulance were deployed to the scene along with officers from the police and Wood County Sheriff's Department, Owen said.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the scene. An official from the National Transportation and Safety Board is expected later today, Punke said
