    I'm learning on my own, and I've playing for a little less than a month, so I don't think I'm the best to give advice here. However, this is what I do (note that I'm having a really hard time with barre chords, too). Instead of barring first, I put my other fingers on the frets first. Once I get a clear sound out of those strings, I proceed to put the barre. My index is very close to the fret, and I press the strings on a 20-30 degree angle (rough estimate). My thumb is in the middle of the neck, and it's more or less at the same height as my middle finger. I keep that position for a while and I strum a bit, to develop strength. Once my hand starts hurting, I release. Again, I don't know if this is correct or not, it's just what I do. I hope I helped some.

    Pretty good advice.

    Just form the chord and make sure each note is ringing clearly. If you're muting a string reposition your fingers until you get it right. Just like anything else it takes a lot of practice and there is no magical "do this and you will be able to play barre chords perfectly" you just have to keep trying until you get it.

    Don't pluck the strings or they break?

    Do an F first. F is the easiest bar chord. Put your index finger on the 1st fretboard. Make sure there is sound.
    Then, put your other fingers. Make sure there do sound too. Then you strum ska like.
    And if you're godlike, do an A/D7 bar chord.
    ;D
    I find it easier higher up the frets cause the frets are closer to eachother. The most important thing like others have said before, make sure its sounding good. Grab the chord and strum each string seperately and make sure they sound good. Good luck!

    Does every guitarist go through this?

    By "top e" do you mean, the high or low pitched one?

    Some people look at the neck differently.

    Hokay, this is my hand playing a bar/barre chord in standard tuning.

    As you can see, my index finger is holding down the large E string on the third fret

    My ring finger is holding down the A string on the fifth fret

    and my pinky finger is holding down the small D string on the fifth fret

    It also looks like this on a common guitar fret board

    The numbers being which finger I'm using

    Strum the three strings you have your fingers on, and, shazam!

    A bar chord.

    If you need help with bar chords in drop tuning as in "drop D", learning regular chords as in A, G, D, C, ect., let me know

    I love teaching people about playing
    I don't think that's a barre chord.

    A barre chord would require you to use one finger to play multiple notes. So you are "barring" multiple frets with a single finger. Kind of like how you can play a power chord in drop D with a single finger, except you're also using other fingers to play more notes.

    I've only been playing for a couple months but I think I'm right.

    There's different types of bar chords. I was taught that was a power chord/bar chord.

    If he wants straight bar chords, then you bar the whole fret with your finger, and use your two other fingers on the other strings.

    He's barring F# with an E shape. Or in less musical terms, barring the 3rd fret. That diagram just doesn't show that the first finger is across the strings.

    Really?

    Picture is kinda blurry but it looks like he is just playing a power chord.

    I'm self taught so I may be wrong and I am willing to accept that. I'm just not convinced yet :/

    Nononoo. That is not a bar chord. That is called a Power Chord or Rock Chord.

    I can see from that diagram you are doing a G right? So, doing a barred chord that is G is required the following..

    3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th fRetts.
    E|-1-|---|---|---|---|
    A|-1-|---|-3-|---|---|
    D|-1-|---|-4-|---|---|
    G|-1-|-2-|---|---|---|
    B|-1-|---|---|---|---|
    e|-1-|---|---|---|---|

    or if you are a nub.

    E|-5-|---|---|---|---|
    A|---|---|-3-|---|---|
    D|---|---|-4-|---|---|
    G|---|-2-|---|---|---|
    B|-1-|---|---|---|---|
    e|-1-|---|---|---|---|

    Index = 1
    Middle = 2
    Ring = 3
    Pinky = 4
    Thumb = 5
