Final Fantasy 8 (who is laguna)

I havnt played the game in years, and this is baffling me to hell, but is Laguna and his crew, and how do they relate to Squall and all them? Hes the charecter you play as in a few flashbacks. I forget if you actualley learn at some point in the game, so please if you do learn it in the game, please tell me that you do. I dont want to know until I figure out myself
