    Default Sounding out words.

Simply put: my seven year old cousin is a complete dunce. I've been using Starfall to help him learn how to sound out words, but he's not actually trying to learn how to link the sounds to make words. He's only in it for the happy little games, and what not.

I request some help with getting this guy to link the sounds in words to form the words themselves.

    Leap Pad's don't work.
Lock him in the room, and tell him he can't come out until he finishes a Cat in the Hat book?

    Cruel, but it'll work.

You could try this card game:

It's not intended for learning purposes, but it basically gives you easy words/sounds that you use to build more complex phrases. The one on the commerical is:

"Eye mull of mush sheen" = "I'm a love machine".

Not sure how much help he needs, but if he can read fine then it'll help putting sounds together to form words, helping him break down harder words to sounds.

    Example:

I spent 30 minutes trying to get him to say the word "leg."

He can sound it out fine ("Luh," "Eh," "Guh"), but he can't say it.

He somehow got the word, "meg," out of it.

I find it ****ing stupid, but that's what I need him to learn how to do. Link basic sounds in order to say the full word.

Once he can do that, then I'll ease him into reading with a child's book, then a month or two down the road force him to read the ****ing dictionary.

Sounds like you have a case of ******osis. This needs to be treated fast, or else he'll turn fully into one and ruin all lives with his AOE attack.

I don't know if this is any help but here's an online dict, which doesn't only translate the words into German and vise versa but also has computer voices pronouncing all the words(English and German). You can choose between the computer's voice, a real person's voice and your own.

He's able-minded, and capable of learning; he's just ignorant. My uncle gave him to my aunt to watch (in another country), but she didn't send him to school or even tried to teach him how to read or speak properly. Because she's a greedy person, she only ever leached the money she got from him in favor of use for her own kids. Whatever he's learned, he's learned from his dad when he had time off from work, or from mimicking others.

@Mofo, Thanks and all, but it's no better than Starfall. The only difference is that Starfall is more in depth on sounding out letters and words as a whole.

@Z0MBiE, Except he can't sound out words. 4/5ths of that would just confuse him. >_<

;/ Ask his parents to take him to a speech therapist, there could be a multitude of problems.

Possibly, but my parents are lazy, and my uncle is out of town. His step mother's a *****, so that's out of the question.

You seem like you're pretty concerned about your cousin. ;o Maybe you should sit down with your uncle after he comes back from his trip and tell him how you feel? You also seem like a pretty intelligent guy, I have a feeling you'll work it out. ;D

but if he could hear the person singing the words too, maybe it would all click together.

just feed him some whiskey and let him sing his little heart out. :3

That'll have to do, I guess. Although if anyone has any websites, tips, or know any products that might help, it would be great if you could share.

I want him to learn how to sound out words, though. He's not always going to have someone to read the word for him. >_<

My uncle is hell-bent on me teaching the kid. I'm not sure how to get him to say the words other than having him sound it out faster and faster until he can hear what it sounds like. Even then, he refuses to do it and then over thinks the situation and wears himself out.

No matter what I try, he doesn't understand that sounding out is essentially a superficial way of saying the word. <.<

Go, if possible, to an elementary school and ask (a) teacher(s) for advice.
I'm sure they know how to teach that kids.

When I teach my nephews maths or so I have a reward ready for them. It'll give them something to look forward to -> more afford.

Starfall is one fo the best browser based softwares, I'm telling you. Click the letter (which is ridiculously large on screen, mind you), it'll sound it out for you. Click the word, it will sound out the individual letters in the word and then have the word pronounced right after. It repeats each sound three times, and then uses a word with the [current] letter as a starter in an example. When you've finished those three recordings, it will lead you to an interactive matching game.

They have plenty of videos, games and demonstrations, and he's seemed to learn how to sound it out.

I'm telling you guys, though, he's having difficulty linking the sounds.

Maybe it will take a crap load of repitition for him to get it the first time? Make him replay the same level 1000 times, or until he gets the word right? I know someone who learns that way as well.

Lol, I've been doing that. I even blared the volume to make sure he got it. He's been able to understand and say some words.

    Let me be more specific.

He has trouble with letters that don't have a very profound sound. Like,"L," or, "H."

It might just be the accent he's taken on from his dialect in the case of the "H," though.

He also mixes up some letters, so I'm starting to think he has a mild case of dyslexia.

He somehow managed to get "et," "meg," and "e," out of "leg."

Maybe for L, let him practice some sounds instead, like: "Le" "Li" "La" etc.

That would give him the same tongue movement/brain registry as a standard L, but it would make it more profound and easier. For words try to break em into two or three letters? Like LEG, let him try leeeehhhh-hhhguh. Don't worry bout the speed, just make sure he has the right technique, speed will come naturally as he learns and talks.

Keep us in touch (or at least me ) Sometimes, it is easier to put some letters together, like Ha instead of just H. Sadly, all the easy words to say are bad words you don't want him saying. Darn this cruel world.

I guess it'll just be you, then, lol. Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I felt like I was at a dead end up until now. I fell like I have a little leeway, now.
