What would you do?
A man, who has grown up with a fairly average life; he owns a house and has a wife and two kids, gets a letter in the mail. It is addressed to him, and is from the public library from his hometown. He opens it, of course, he is curious. In the letter, it states that he has an overdue book with some obscure title he can't even remember ever reading. He owes over $1,000.
Outraged, he calls the library and complains. They say there is nothing they can do to help him, and he is expected to pay, or it'll go against his credit, or be taken to court, or whatever. Anyways, after ranting about how bullshit this is, he finally calms down. "Look, dont' you have other copies of the book?" To which they replied, "Only one."
So he offers to buy a bunch more copies for them, in exchange that they take away his fee. The librarian says no, and he says why not? "The book hasn't been checked out once since you took it."
I'd promptly say to the old hag "THEN WHY THE HELL ARE YOU MAKING A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS!"
Also; I doubt they would have a court case. Take them to court, they've got nothing if nobody checked the book out and he offered to buy multiple copies of it.
