As for those screenshots.. It's easy to photoshop something without any forethought.
Honestly, it's not like Diablo II wasn't without bright and vibrant colours. Remember the deserts of Act II? The rainforest of Act III? You want emo-darkness everywhere? Go somewhere else.

WTF! Games are about Gameplay/story/good and sleek controls
Not graphics! I see the artist style resembles WOW, That is no reason not to buy it. Even though i think Diablo 2 was a piece of crap. I don't understand how people just mash buttons for hours to get new Lewt.
The enviroment looks but like wow, mainly in the wall sections. The chracter models don't look horrid. They are really not that good though.

Right now the game is an oxymoron in my mind, the edited pictures are a lot better because they actually show the difference between light and dark.
This is diablo, not warcraft.
@ asdf55 : Yah the reason the desert has vibrant colors is because ITS OUTSIDE. These screenshots are all inside thus far or in some ruins, they aren't supposed to be colorful and vibrant their supposed to show horror and contrast.

those pics look pretty diablo esque to me
cartoony is blizzards style, you cant see it in starcraft or diablo becuase the graphics were to bad to be defined like that

I NEVER got scared at all in either game, not even close. I wasn't 8 when I played them though.
And it's Diablo 3 not Diablo 1.5, obviously it will be more like the second than the first.

actually i think the people are trapped in WoW, not Blizzard. it doesnt look anything like WoW to me but maybe thats cause i didnt play it for over 5 years.

Not this again.... people are complaining about a game that's probably not going to be released for another two years. It's like the new trend every orpg/mmorpg gets compared to WoW in some shape or form like it's the only game people have ever played in their life time or something; first thing I'd like to get clear is that Blizzard was not the first to use the gfx style WoW uses; second, even though d3 is looking a lot different than d2 I still feel it doesn't resemble the WoW like graphics that people claim it does; sure there's similarities but what does that even matter? People should be concerned about the things that made diablo and diablo II so great.. main one being GAMEPLAY.
I'm a huge diablo fan; I 100% trust blizzard because they haven't let me down ever; sure I'll be upset if Diablo III sucks but I guarantee if that happens it won't be because of the gfx.

hey moron, welcome to the world where there are still people that haven't played World of Warcraft and still think it resembles the style more than it should.

again, it's plain obvious that the inspiration for D3 comes from WoW in terms of style. There are no skulls, blood pools and most of the enemies shown so far don't quite express the "i'm flipping scary dangerous!"-feeling. The skeletons look like the skeletons you find in childrens books, the concept is scary but the actual design is everything but. Same goes for the exploding fat monsters, the stiches they have seem to be made with jumbo diameter size wire, hence again losing a lot of it's scare factor.
The candles are typically WoW, 5 polygons per candle and a cutsey flame on top of it.
However, i still haven't changed my mind of buying it, but for the love of good at least acknowledge the clearly obvious source of inspiration ...
