As in on an electric guitar?

Just press the string down...do it fast...like you're hitting the string at the fret. If you do it slow or softly, you'll just silence the string.

Or try sliding down/up the string..

It's very easy. Fret one string, like, say, on the fifth fret, and with your other finger, hammer down on the seventh fret. To do a pull off, once you've hammered down, just pull down and off the string.

Just grab a scale, and play it with only hammer ons (if theres at least 3 notes per string better).
    In time you'll get it.

    Very very easy.

    Index finger = 1st finger.
    Middle finger = 2nd.
    Ring Finger = 3rd.
    Pinky = 4th.

    This is just an example:

With your SECOND FINGER, press down on the B string's 3rd fret (can be any string or fret). Strum the string. With your THIRD FINGER (while keeping the B string pressed down with your second finger) bring it down fast onto the 4th fret.

    /hammeron.

To do a pulloff, just quickly lift off your THIRD FINGER.

    NOTE:

During my example (assuming you do the pulloff I suggested right after the hammeron I suggested) your SECOND FINGER on the 3rd fret DOES NOT move.

    Hope I helped.

Like above have said, it really isn't that hard, when you've deveoped finger strength.

First off, try using your 3rd and 4th finger, as these will probably be your strongest fingers. Make sure you're hitting the string with the right part of your finger; right on the tip. Practice with slurs:

Pick, say the D string, and then hammer on the 2nd fret. Do this quickly, but comfortably. There should be a fluid motion/sound.

Do not put up the gain like this tool told you too. You'll develop a bad habit. Make sure your on a clean channel, so you can hear everything. you don't want your playing to be distorted when you're just learning a new technique.

Just use force and slam your finger down to 'hammer on' the string.

Your fingers are probably just weak at the moment.
