NOTHING can beat it and NOTHING needs to beat it to be successful. You should be more concerned about what games will be worth playing in the future rather than who's gonna beat who. AOC and WAR both had a lot of players to start with and lost them all due to rushed and half assed work.

The next game to reach those numbers will be whatever Blizzard announces as their next MMORPG.That we might know in a few months when Shanghai hosts Blizzard WWI 2009.
Besides, when it comes out most of us will be playing Diablo 3 anyways so it won't matter.
Is that why NA players of WoW only make up about 20% or so of their userbase? China alone has over 5 million WoW players which is more than 2x the NA userbase.

Get a different well known game company... Let's do nexon. Get any game, mabinogi or Maplestory.
Advertise it alot in magazines and flaunt your statistics everywhere. Maybe make it a cheaper monthly rate. Do some dumb commercials. Get a little more money and hire some star like Mr T. and make him have a mabinogi character that looks like him and he says some stupid crap. Release "expansion" and "gamepacks" in the stores. And wait a year or two.

WoW did not actually do much advertisements prior to initial launch, it was only after a few months before they discovered they hit the gold mine and decided to "expand", aka do mass advertising.

A virtual reality game would beat WoW in terms of population.
Now to be serious, no game can beat WoW in terms of population. It's been a few years since WoW's release to get up to 11mil subscribers. A new game would have to wait a few years to actually reach at least 10mil. Even so, the time you give the new game to reach 10mil, WoW would bump up to 20mil.
