Reputation: 14technically it was already done by UO in 1997. When origin still hosted it. That is if your basing off the 11million.
Everquest once had more players than wow ever did.
Maybe diablo 3
Reputation: 43I would say Guild wars 2, or Aion
Warhammer Online, soon enouph the world will see this.
Reputation: 49they would need to:
-Wipe T4 and start from scratch
-remove 85% of the CC in the game
-get half close to a decent career balance and not screw it again in the next patch
-focus like 500% more in PvP and 500% less in PvE,
- make a decent city siege that doesnt involve doing a PQ for 6 hours straight while avoiding the other realm...most ppl that quit WAR,quit the day after a city was sieged for the first time in their server
and overall make the RvR game they promised instead of that endless door-beating-zergfest-snorefest with awful core mechanics
so yeah, i think Blizzard will release their new MMO and own the world before Mythic finally understands all thats wrong with WAR and take the first steps to fix it...not even talking about actually fixing it
We must go forward, not backward. Upward, not forward. And always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!
Currently Playing:
- Guild Wars 2
Waiting for:
- Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade
Reputation: 119Your just going to have to wait until WoW has had its time, no game started out with as huge a playerbase as WoW did nor did they get advertised like nuts on stuff like south park...you know how many guys who play games that watch south park and saw that episode? WoW really knew what they were doing there...I would say they were smart for doing that, which they were, but it also has a ton to do with them starting with so much more money than any other mmorpg has.
I'm sure if all of the people who play WoW were to stop playing for like say 2 or 3 weeks...then try every other game out there I would bet almost every single one of them would find at least one other game they would want to play. It has to do with personal choice yes but it also has a shitload to do with them playing WoW first and not being in touch with the rest of the gaming community because who cares they have WoW.
I'm glad they've found such a large playerbase, I won't be playing WoW probably ever as I don't find it to my liking but I think it's great that blizzard has that much of a following.
It really really bugs me when people start up stuff the WoW killer or WoW is better than all other games because those are all very ignorant things to say..there is no game that is going to "kill" WoW just as "WoW" has never killed another game...games don't kill each other unless they make a direct copy, change nothing about the skills or anything, and just update the graphics/animations and even then that's just a remake plus some people with lower computer specs will still play the old one...one game ruining another never happens because it just isn't possible.
Nor is WoW better or worst than any game, it is just different just as every other game is different from each other. Think of it as say...people. I think we can all agree that everyone is different even if it has to come down to the genetic material and whatnot..but we are all in the same species.
Reputation: 228a high number of players is also indicating that the company is doing well, and this will also attract more players. its in the mind, if they log into a dead town, they will go "omfg, game is dying".
and besides, the millions of players in WoW are spread across so many servers. i think you are misleading yourself into thinking all the millions of players are clustered in one server. =/
Reputation: 10Another game made by Blizzard.
Reputation: 482Yeah I can because it's not a fact it's an opinion. There are lesser known games that are far more enjoyable to me and many other people the what is the Onrpg current flavor of the month. I always ask why people feel a large player base is so important because I do not respect quantity I respect quality.
You and others here seem to have the notion that a game must have a large player base in order for it to be good and no matter how much you or anyone else wants to classify good or bad as "fact" it's still opinion. And since we all use these forums to share our opinions on various subjects I don't see the harm in asking a simple question.
I'm not pissed, just wondering why you are so annoyed by the fact I don't agree with you and everyone else. I'm not the one saying 'if you're so much of an individual player, dont freaking play MMOs, go play some offline single player games. geez. you still dont get what the "MMO" in "MMORPG" means."
That doesn't sound too friendly to me, Buddum. Maybe it's you that's pissed.
I get ya, but at the same time I dunno. I mean who really cares how many people play the game you like if you enjoy it? I don't. I've spent a long time playing games in small, medium and large communities and more people comming or going was only a bonus, not requirement.
Reputation: 10How is a number of subscribers an opinion? I didn't know we live in a world where a company gives an "opinion" about their numbers to investors and public.
The equation of "more people = better game" may be an opinion, but the fact that there are more people playing a game stays as fact, and from its numbers we can create a statistics which explains why the game is so popular. That may still be an opinion, but it's an opinion which is agreed by the mass. You can choose not to be in one of those mass, but the stats stays and tells us many things which you can't deny, and one of those is the fact that many people like that game.
Unfortunately, the world doesn't revolve just around you. You can't ignore people's opinion which are supported by facts of numbers.
Don't forget Gaia Online and Habbo Hotel to go along with those amazing games.
The next game to reach those numbers will be whatever Blizzard announces as their next MMORPG.That we might know in a few months when Shanghai hosts Blizzard WWI 2009.
Besides, when it comes out most of us will be playing Diablo 3 anyways so it won't matter.
Is that why NA players of WoW only make up about 20% or so of their userbase? China alone has over 5 million WoW players which is more than 2x the NA userbase.
This can easily be done if a company is willing to try something new such as virtual world gaming. It will happen sooner or later with the new technology coming. Then every little boy will run out and buy a virtual helmet. that would be cool tho. i promise that will beat wow.
This so sucks that someone has to always make a thread with Wow in it!
The word should be banned!
What do you think can top WoW in players, eventually?
who really cares

Wow isn't free!

Reputation: 11I know a lot of Diablo fans dislike the very aspect of a 'World of Diablo' scenario, but I've always wanted something like that. Of course, I wouldn't want it to be like WoW, I'd want it to have it's own style, to be the same as the previous games, you know, fast paced, killing loads of demons etc. I could see it working, but it'd have to be tweaked A LOT and it'd have to be very different from standard MMOs.
But I could definitely see it working great. I love WoW, but the diablo fan in my has always craved for a Diablo MMO. But if I have to choose between a D3 and a D3 MMO, I'd probably choose D3, unless the MMO was extremely different from usual MMOs.
I don't believe Blizz would make a Diablo MMO unless it was drastically different though, they've always made sure their games evolved, but didn't stray from what made it great to being with.
Diablo 3 when it comes out
Cause' hot women on internet, omg, right?
Whores.
