Default Germany school shooting linked to video games

    http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/03...strike-player/

Tim Kretschmer, the German 17 year-old who was named as yesterday killing 15 people before taking his own life, was “good” at the online military squad game, Counter-Strike, a friend of his has told Associated Press. And a local Police chief has said that Kretschmer played the kind of videogames “typical for someone carrying out a mass shooting”.

Are videogames being blamed again for another school shooting?

Kretschmer used a 9mm Berretta pistol to kill nine girls, one boy and three women teachers at his school, before fleeing the school and killing three male passersby nearby. He died by killing himself in the middle of a firefight with Police in a car park 20 miles from the school.

The gun was his father’s, who owned 14 other firearms and was a member of a gun club. Only the Beretta was not kept locked up.

Kretschmer was a “lower than average” pupil in test scores, and “wasn’t engaged in school events”. A friend told Associated Press that he had shown her a note to his parents that “he’s suffering and can’t go on.” Friends of the gunman also described him as quiet and reserved and said he had talked of feeling “mocked” by other pupils and “ignored” by teachers.

Kretschmer conducted the killings “dressed in all black”, with worrying echoes of Dylan Harris and Eric Klebold who carried out the “Columbine massacre” in America, and the 2002 shooting of 16 by 19-year-old Robert Steinhaeuser also in Germany.

Easy access to guns, complaints of bullying and being ignored, a penchant for black clothing, enjoyment of shooter videogames – clearly none of these on their own are enough to turn someone into a killer. But that hasn’t stopped local police chief Ralf Michelfelder putting some of the blame on Counter-Strike already.

Counter-Strike, the popular online PC and console game by Valve, the makers of Left4Dead, features squads of terrorists and anti-terrorist forces taking each other on in various locations. Missions include setting and exploding or successfully defusing bombs, protecting or assassinating a “VIP” and guarding or rescuing hostages.

Why not just blame EVERY other shooting game?
Jeez, blame the ****ing person, not the game.

EDIT: This reminded me of "MYGOT". That little video on youtube. Where this nerd keeps "hacking" and shooting him in the head, then the nerd who got his *** kicked goes into the school and kills everyone with a pistol.

Pfft, cant find a logical reason so they start blaming games?
Maybe the kid was just ****ed up from the start.

i would like to take this opportunity to point out that although video games can hardly be solely responsible for stuff like this..... there are a disproportionate number of people who play counterstrike and think guns are liek relly relly kewl.

on your average online shooter there probably isnt someone who can list 20 pages of weapons specifications from memory... but on CS there is always some jackass like that. probably wanking himself whilst shoving a silencer up his butt and reading bravo two zero.

honestly like i said before they should make all gamers take a test and based on the results of those test they will be able to buy certain games by showing the id or submitting the id number......the test would consist of questions that show the stability of that persons mind and such.....because these stupid psycho ****fags are giving us gamers a bad name and i really dont like it

edit- and his fathers a fcking douche as well...why would he leave the gun unlocked like that...and why were the parents so unaware of the childs depression....seriously parents fcking fail in todays society

most parents just think that giving their child a roof over his head, food and education will be enough on their part. how many parents actually looks deeper into the relationship bonding and other psychological parts ?

I think the society and the parents should be the ones to be blamed, since this kind of person exist only due to his surroundings. Blaming it to a game? I played CS alot, but it didnt cross my mind to kill people even if they act like terrorist

Hmmm, so if you play CS you go out killing people? Good thing he dident play C&C. He would of used his over-view powers to control an army! Oh shit, we would have armor bears and cyborgs running around everywhere.

Some people can have break downs and get the ideas from video games, like Dylan Harris who loved this girl he was writing about in his journal but found out she hated him, he had an emotional break down and said he would take his own life but as for his friend Eric he was influenced from DOOM and other games thinking he was a godlike figure.

That article is much better explanation than games as a reason for his rampage.

We all play MMORPGs and shit like that, so I say we all get together, grab our swords and shields and head out to the local mountains and slay some dragons for gold pieces and exp. and a chance to upgrade our armor and weapons!

    Who's with me?
I'd like to shoot a lot of people, I'm in.

    *raises hand*

I'll ninja-loot all of the loot, though.

And on topic: I somehow doubt that playing Counter-Strike led him to believe that "guns = good way to solve problems." More likely: he needed a way to release all of the stress and depression in him, and he was doing Counter-Strike for a while, but in some sick pathway of his brain he thought it was a good idea to unload on all of the people at his school whom he blamed for his problems.

For reals, I like to get my stress off playing video games and exercising. I'm not sure how video games cause aggression, because I always feel a lot less aggressive after I've gotten it all out of me by getting headshots or whatever.

videogames is really easy to get blamed for almost everything... no one will defense videogames, since most gamers are just kids or students

Nothing to do with games, he was obviously a geek.
Kids who get picked on usually are school shooters, then the news nails them as "crazy messed up mental children" when really, it was probably other people's faults.
Plus his dad had 15 accessible guns?

This is all I need to read to know this kid was not influenced by video games; but was in fact a ******ed emo whom had access to guns.
