Tim Kretschmer, the German 17 year-old who was named as yesterday killing 15 people before taking his own life, was “good” at the online military squad game, Counter-Strike, a friend of his has told Associated Press. And a local Police chief has said that Kretschmer played the kind of videogames “typical for someone carrying out a mass shooting”.
Are videogames being blamed again for another school shooting?
Kretschmer used a 9mm Berretta pistol to kill nine girls, one boy and three women teachers at his school, before fleeing the school and killing three male passersby nearby. He died by killing himself in the middle of a firefight with Police in a car park 20 miles from the school.
The gun was his father’s, who owned 14 other firearms and was a member of a gun club. Only the Beretta was not kept locked up.
Kretschmer was a “lower than average” pupil in test scores, and “wasn’t engaged in school events”. A friend told Associated Press that he had shown her a note to his parents that “he’s suffering and can’t go on.” Friends of the gunman also described him as quiet and reserved and said he had talked of feeling “mocked” by other pupils and “ignored” by teachers.
Kretschmer conducted the killings “dressed in all black”, with worrying echoes of Dylan Harris and Eric Klebold who carried out the “Columbine massacre” in America, and the 2002 shooting of 16 by 19-year-old Robert Steinhaeuser also in Germany.
Easy access to guns, complaints of bullying and being ignored, a penchant for black clothing, enjoyment of shooter videogames – clearly none of these on their own are enough to turn someone into a killer. But that hasn’t stopped local police chief Ralf Michelfelder putting some of the blame on Counter-Strike already.
Counter-Strike, the popular online PC and console game by Valve, the makers of Left4Dead, features squads of terrorists and anti-terrorist forces taking each other on in various locations. Missions include setting and exploding or successfully defusing bombs, protecting or assassinating a “VIP” and guarding or rescuing hostages.
