I haven't tried this yet, but if the game is good I might download it myself when I finish with three kingdoms.

its too old for me to really get into it...im not that much of a gfx ***** but the combat and gfx feel wayy too ancient for me

Its better if you buy the expansions, but you don't need to. Also it gets kinda repetitive running terminal missions over and over. Other than that its still a cool game.

Community is awesome, but dwindling.
Game is complicated as hell but worth learning.
Combat is slow but strategic (more so in PvP)
Graphics are meh but they work...
Personally I would wait until the graphics update to start again like me not because of the graphics but because a lot of people will be showing up...though it might be a good idea to get to like level 20~ so that when it comes the subways won't be unbearable lol
and yes you can do just fine with the f2p content, but after about a year of playing your going to need the p2p most likely.

AO was due for a graphics update and there are vids available regarding it but whether they still plan to implement it I'm unsure
