Default Cryptic (Champions Online) admits using City of Heroes forums to recruit beta testers

    http://www.massively.com/2009/03/19/...-really-sorry/

So some new developments have been made concerning allegations that Cryptic Studios was using the City of Heroes forums for Champions Online beta recruitment.

Massively commenter PunkRockDiva has pointed us to a forum post by Cryptic associate community relations manger IronAngel, who relayed a message from his boss, Ivan Sulic. Within that message Ivan confirmed the rumor, saying there was no ill intent in what happened. He then explained why it happened -- that community, PR and marketing are in the middle of restructuring. "Shills, poaching, bullshotting... No chance, man. We make good games and we hope people will play them. Best anyone can do, right?" Was how Mr. Sulic concluded his message.

If the name Ivan Sulic sounds familiar, you may remember him as the Hellgate: London community manager telling players concerned about the game's lack of a LAN mode, "Who the **** cares?" Well, we're pretty sure a lot of people care nowadays, Mr. Sulic. This was all dug up by Scott Jennings, who posted his opinion of the whole matter on his website, Broken Toys.

As Scott points out, it's not an apology if you make light of the matter and pretend it's not a big deal. As people who love the MMO genre, this is not the sort of behavior we want the industry to feel is acceptable. And as such, when a developer has upcoming titles we very much want to play -- like Champions Online and Star Trek Online -- it evaporates our desire to support them.

    [Update]

We've received a comment from Mr. Ivan Sulic with an apology and felt it should be reflected here, "So, to the point then... I am sorry. Cryptic is sorry. This should not have happened. It was inappropriate and it will not happen again. Please understand that we truly did not intend any offense, though.

The people involved are very sorry about it, believe me. This has been a big headache when it should have been as simple as, 'Hey, any MMO guild folks want to play Champions?'" It's great to have this cleared up, as nobody at Massively wanted any of this to remain unclear to either ourselves or to you, our readers.

Meh, this has been done since the UO to EQ transition and will continue to be done long after Champions Online cuts off their servers. It's unprofessional, but it's not uncommon.

Geez, if they want beta testers, there isn't need to go spamming other games' forum. Come straight to my clan and we will take all the CB keys you have <_<'

Not related to the topic but, why did cinderboy take over Brians position as 'The one with all the news'?

It's usually customary to approach those who are very established with a history of class/content/etc progression, community leaders, or simply friends of those working on the product.

LOL come on...thats kinda disgraceful especially since CoX is gonna suffer a huge blow from DC universe already. Everyone team i was in the conversation always led to talking about how everyone cant wait to play it.

I dont blame champions though. Why would you want to get Beta testers that have no idea what the game should play like when you can get Beta testers who already have an idea of how superhero mmorpg's work and what needs improving.

Im not saying they should make it like CoX but there were many things left out of CoX that Champions would be able to implement if they had beta testers that played CoX.

Personally I think it's extremely stupid that they are making so many of these...they should all just get together and update CoV/H like crazy I don't understand why it is so abandoned.

QFT but its all about "Money" If it wasnt we wouldnt have so many Cash-Shop mmorpg's where 90% of them play the same.

All Cox really needed was a graphic update (Yes it did look at the characters etc skills were fine) and some more attracting content.

But meh im only really looking forward to the DC one anyway.

From what we have seen related to CO, DC, and Marvel I'm not so sure that COX will have much trouble staying afloat. Especially, after next month when I14 goes live in it. I will definitely try the others and am currently playing CO, but they will all have their pros and cons.
