    Default Just a question ^^

    Hey there!

    I've been wondering about something and I just can't find the answer :o

    Maybe Onrpg can...

    The question is: What produces/gives light, but isn't warm?

    [Note; Reflecting light (planets) and stored light (glow in the dark) doesn't count]

    ie:

    Mushrooms-

    Glow worms-

    Those store light and shine when it's dark so that doesn't count :o

    Fire fly?

    Glowing in the dark item are chemical reaction. They don't store light.

    In the mean time, I'll post this awesome glow worm video:

    They remind me of those ceiling things from half life O___O

    Light is heat transfer through radiation.
    The question is a little "stupid", because of how it is formulated.

    If you exclude glow sticks (energy that would otherwise heat up the stick emitted as light, aside from thermal energy (glowing steel, wolfram in lightbulbs)) you exclude basically everything that might otherwise activate (chemical, electrical, magnetic, through electromagnetic waves, through kinetic energy, through gravitation, etc.) the Atoms to the level of emitting light, besides here, aren't you?

    Light is emitted through electrons moving from a activated potential to a lower one.
    At the activated potential they are osciallting at a higher frequence, therfore they are "hot". The energy to activate them ("heat" them up from the stable state) must be provided by some artificial form of energy.
    After they fall down to a lower potential, they give off this energy and the atom therfore "cools off" again.

    Light and heat don't exist in separation.
    Even in glow sticks, or when light gets reflected, it's the same process (reflection is light activating atoms, which than again emit the energy gained from light as light; in between it is stored as both, potential energy of the electron and kinetic energy of the electron (which is heat)).

    Lets just assume he asking for weak heat in lights and not no heat.

    That's
    * reflection
    * glowsticks
    * LED's
    * A TV screen

    Those are the practical technical applications of the general principles that are useful.
    There are probably a million more.
    Also natural ones, like those Oister brought up.

    Light holds quite a bit of energy. You won't find any material lighting up, without delivering it.

    Yeah.......

    I would have pretty much said what Ronin said.

    *nods*

    I would have probably flicked my mane of sexy hair around at the same time though, and looked way cooler.

    those lifesavers I think the white mint ones emit light/a flash when you crunch em in your mouth. I think to see it you are supposed to go into a really dark room and hold a mirror in front of your face, crunch on the livesaver and you'll see the flash of light.

    yes I'm serious.

    i think anything that gives off light gives off heat(energy).

    those things from the movie Pitch Black that they put into empty whiskey bottles so that they can find their way to the junked shuttle without Riddick's help.

    but that was probably just a plot device. like caves that have a mysterious eldritch glow so that the hero who just happens to be passing through can see where he is going.

    never mind then.

    anyways i thought light always produces heat, albeit in tiny amounts, like those people above mentioned.

    Well stars, they don't get warm... Extremly hot but not warm. Basically some of the energy used to produce light will always get wasted as heat.

    No I know what it is the light in your fridge!
